This 1995 children's comedy holds 7 ghosts, each with a bundle of powers, and strange restrictions.
So Casper (1995) is an extremely weird movie. Carrigan, an evil blond lady, and her... partner(?) Dibs, are given Whipstaff manor, a large mansion in Maine that apparently has treasure locked inside. The duo head over to Maine and are immediately scared off the premises by Casper (accidentally), Stretch, Fatso, and Stinky (intentionally). The evil duo ponders over how they are going to deal with the ghost problem in order to find the treasure. While Carrigan looks for an answer, Casper sees a news broadcast about Dr.James Harvey, a ghost therapist, and his daughter Kat, with who Casper is infatuated with. In this world, ghosts exist as souls with unfinished business. Now I don't know how Dr.Harvey knows this, but he does. So Casper uses his ghost powers to get to Carrigan's hotel, put the TV on the same ad, and she hires Dr.Harvey. The Harvey family arrives at Whipstaff, and Casper shows himself to Kat, who faints, then screams, alerting her father. Dr.Harvey comes up, finds Casper, and also screams.
Pause here.
Why does Dr.Harvey scream seeing Casper? Clearly, he must have seen ghosts because he knows how to get ghosts to pass on... right? If not, how does he know this secret to ghosts? A strange inconsistency here.
Anyway.
The trio, Stretch, Fatso, and Stinky, are not as receptive to new folks as Casper is, and begin to spook, attack, and harass Dr.Harvey. After temporarily incapacitating the ghosts in a vacuum (for some reason they could not escape the vacuum), they meet for breakfast, where Dr.Harvey begins trying to get these three to find what they are still in the living world for. During this time, Casper and Kat explore the house, giving Casper his memories back, and finding Casper's father's secret lab. Carrigan and Dibs follow the two young explorers into the lab, and find the vault. They see the Lazarus, the machine meant to revive the dead, and just as Kat and Casper were about to bring Casper back to life, Carrigan steals the secret formula, and heads off with Dibs.
Second pause.
So... Casper knows about this machine to revive him, he knows his dad made it to bring him back, he knows about the secret lab, so why did his dad never bring him back? Everything is there. The two don't finish some vital part of the machine, they just turn it on. Why didn't Casper's dad revive him?
Back to the evil duo.
Carrigan realizes if one of them die (her or Dibs) they could just phase through the vault, open it from the inside, and then revive themselves with the machine. So Carrigan starts trying to murder Dibs. In this struggle, Carrigan dies herself, and becomes a ghost. Her plan goes off wonderfully. She gets the treasure, is about to return, but then Dibs betrays her. Carrigan then uppercuts Dibs out the window. Dibs never comes back. Kat and Casper trick Ghost Carrigan into admitting she has fulfilled her purpose as a ghost, and she passes on to heaven I guess? The treasure is just some baseball that Casper loves anyway so it wasn't good for anything anyway. During this entire time, Dr.Harvey is getting drunk with the ghost trio and accepts them. The trio accepts him too, but want to kill him and become a ghost quartet. After Dr.Harvey is all sappy towards them though, they decide they can't do it, and about two seconds later he dies anyway. He just falls into a pit. So Kat's dad is dead, and instead of reviving Casper, they revive James, his dead wife returns to say goodbye and good luck, and Casper gets to be a real boy for a few minutes, dance with Kat, get a smooch, and then return to his ghost form.
WHAT. So what is Casper's purpose in being a ghost? He said he came back to keep his dad company, but his dad seems to be dead? How does the trio fit in? Stretch, Fatso, Stinky... why did they live with Casper? Or at least in Casper's house? What is THEIR purpose as ghosts? Why did Carrigan's dad own Whipstaff manor? Why is it evil for her to take the treasure? She literally owns the entire building, and as such, I would assume whatever is in it? Let's just get to the ghosts.
Not spooky. Casper is round, he is smiley, he is nice. He does have the capacity for spook, as all ghosts have the ability to morph their form, but Casper never uses it for that. 1 in spook.
Danger? Also no. Casper again has the potential for danger. He can lift people into the air, he can withstand any force, but he never uses it for anything dangerous. 2 in danger.
Transform is a 6? They go down to 4 fingers, and become these odd funhouse versions of themselves with no legs,
Name is a 4. Casper? Not very spooky, but well known as a ghost.
The spookiest of the trio because he is the leader. Stretch seems to be the most maniacal, and the smartest. He also looks disturbing, I hate his long face.
Danger is a 5. They have the ability to kill, and many powers to enhance that, but they never do, and only try a little.
Transform is a 6, again his form is not one that easily matches a real face like Casper.
The name Stretch is not very scary, and not well known. a 2.
Fatso is the least interesting of the trio. Basic trio spook is a 4.
Again Fatso could kill people, but he doesn't. Has the same power set as Stretch. He gets a 5.
Transform is the same as the trio at a 6.
Name is a 1. Sorry Fatso. Nothing scary about that name, and is pretty lame.
Spook is basic trio, a 4.
Danger is actually higher than the basic trio. Stinkie has the unique ability to belch a green gas that can momentarily stun whoever breathes it in. So I will give him an extra point for that.
Transform is one below the basic trio. Stinkie looks the most reasonable and human like.
Name is a 1. Stinkie is just as bad as Fatso.
If you know me, you know I love evil blond lady characters, so Ghost Carrigan is close to my heart. She is pretty spooky, mostly because she seems to be the only truly evil ghost in the film, the trio being more of tricksters than villains. Ghost Carrigan gets a 6 in spook.
She is also the most dangerous, having murderous intent, and extreme strength when compared to the other ghosts. Let's say a 7.
Transform is a 5. Again loses her legs, four fingers, but looks a lot like a normal person.
Carrigan is a scary lady name, about a 4 I would say.
Spook is Casper level. Never tries to scare anybody, and doesn't look scary.
Danger is also Casper level. Has the ability, never uses it.
Transform is Carrigan level, looks like himself, no legs and 4 fingers.
Name is a Stinkie Fatso level, not a good undead name.
Normal lady, 1 spook.
Lady has no powers, barely able to touch her husband. 1 danger.
Transform is almost nothing, being slightly sparkly. 1 transform.
Name is a normal lady. 1 Name.
One of the dregs of ghost society.
