The Kirlian Frequency is a short Netflix series, only 5 episodes each just under 10 minutes. It is a cute animation based on calls given to the radio show, The Kirlian Frequency, which is set in the small, secluded town of Kirlian, which seems cursed with monsters and crime. Strange things go on in Kirlian, however, it isn’t as simple as knowing these monsters are real. Some monsters seem to be like us, people with dark urges and wants. We learn something ancient could be causing these problems, and that soon, a comet is said to strike the planet, and wipe out Kirlian, along with the rest of Earth. However, the show seems to have been cut short, the final episode made in 2018, alluding to the next, which has yet to come.
Within the Kirlian Frequency, we have many monsters and villains, however, to guide us through these instances is who I am going to refer to as The Host. The Host is featured in every episode and comments and directs the Kirlian Frequency, while also dealing with threats to the town, such as in episode 1.
The Host is seemingly undead, a silhouetted skeleton, who hides piercing red eyes behind his shades. While he often gives a feeling of groundedness throughout his show, when the mic is off, he becomes much more sinister.
It isn’t completely clear what abilities The Host has, however, he is capable of taking down a werewolf in episode 1 and kidnaps the inflicted man before he turns. We also know of his connection to what is clearly intended on being an Eldritch Horror, who enjoys Stephen King novels. This insinuates a stronger presence than originally suspected, but these possible powers are never shown.
A simple skeleton given red eyes means The Host is only 1 point above basic skeletons, leaving him at a 2.
While The Host is never given a name outright, he is labeled as “The radio host” and I think making the decision to call him The Host is a fair one. Ranking this name, we come straight in the middle. While it is a somewhat spooky name, in horror, it is often associated with the idea of a parasitic host, not a radio one. While this can be slightly confusing, I still think there is a charm to it.
