This week’s WITBU is all about Elder Scrolls 5’s Draugr. Undead somewhere between zombies and skeletons that patrol the nordic ruins of Skyrim. Ancient emaciated corpses who once worshipped dragons as gods, these are some of the most common enemies one faces in the game, and as such are relatively simple. While there are many unique Draugr, we will only be looking at the basic varieties today.
Base and lowest level Draugr. Little armor and weak weaponry. They have no access to spells. (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow).
Spook - 7. Most effectively camouflages with dead Draugr that lay in the tombs and surprise adventurers.
Danger - 3. Often grouped together, and can overwhelm victims, however, they are the weakest Draugr and have no magic abilities.
Transform - 4. All Draugr save for the Hulking will be ranked as 4, as they all have similar designs being based on an emaciated, sunken corpse.
Name - 5. Comes from the nordic word for ghost or spirit. I like it, and gives a cool verbal distinction from zombies or skeletons.
Equally weak as a base Draugr, however, is tied to a boss, and does have access to magic in some cases through Frostbite and the basic weaponry (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow). (Only Accessible in 1 quest)
Spook - 7. Visually the same as a basic Draugr uses the same tactics
Danger - 2. While they can use magic which is a step up from basic Draugr, they will all die when the miniboss is killed, so they can be avoided and all killed at once when the miniboss dies.
Transform - 4. Basic Draugr look plus armor.
Name - 4. Thrall is used to mean a subservient being, and so is docked a point.
1 step up from Draugr. Access to Frostbite and Unrelenting Force (level 1), increased health and damage, and the basic weaponry (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow).
Spook - 7. Visually the same as basic Draugr uses the same tactics.
Danger - 3. While more powerful, they come in smaller groups and have the same danger as a basic Draugr.
Transform - 4. Basic Draugr look.
Name - 4. Docked a point as Restless sounds like a Draugr that is tired, so doesn’t sound the most intimidating.
Step up from Restless. Access to Frostbite, Ice Spike, and Disarm. Increased health and damage, and basic weaponry (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow).
Spook - 7. Visually the same as Draugr uses the same tactics.
Danger - 4. Beginning to implement more complicated and dangerous magics along with their increased strength and durability leads to Wights having a danger of 4. Disarm is more of a nuisance than a powerful shout, so it does not add much.
Transform - 4. Basic Draugr plus armor.
Name - 5. A Wight is another name for basically what Draugr means, so while it sounds cooler slightly, it doesn’t really add anything.
Step up from Wight. Access to Frostbite, Ice Spike, Summon Frost Atronach, Unrelenting Force (Level 2), increased health and damage, and the basic weaponry (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow).
Spook - 6. Because of their distinct armored look, they fit in less with basic Draugr, and as such cannot camouflage as well.
Danger - 5. Summoning Frost Atronachs is what really gives the Scourge the increase in danger, doubling the enemies you need to face when fighting them, and draining away your stamina.
Transform - 4. Draugr plus armor.
Name - 6. A Draugr Scourge retains the strong g and r sounds from Draugr itself, and is a cool word with a fitting meaning.
Step up from Scourge. Access to Frost Cloak, Disarm, Unrelenting Force (Level 2). Increased health and damage, and basic (possibly enchanted) weaponry (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow).
Spook - 7. Overlords don a heavier and more intimidating armor set, which makes up for their lack of camouflage.
Danger - 5. Access to Frost Cloak seems less viable than Frost Atronach, as one provides a freezing whirlwind around the user, while the other summons an extra friend, or in this case, an extra enemy. However, with a chance at an enchanted weapon, it balances out.
Transform - 4. Draugr with scary armor.
Name - 6. While more intimidating than Scourge, it doesn’t deliver on the same creativity and is given an equal point sum.
Step up from Overlord. Access to Disarm and Unrelenting Force (Level 2). Increased health and damage, and basic enchanted weaponry (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow).
(Rare enemy).
Spook - 6. Loses the extravagant armor for a low key helm, however still failing to blend in well with the dead Draugr.
Danger - 5. While damage is increased, and weaponry is a guaranteed enchanted, they have very little in the magic department, only having two dismissable shouts.
Transform - 4. Draugr in armor.
Name - 4. Honestly is worse than just Wight. Just adding Lord to an already made name is not creative and not fun.
Step up from Draugr Wight Lord. Access to Unrelenting Force (level 2). Increased health and damage, and basic weaponry (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow).
Spook - 7. Their rotting bodies and heavier looking frames give off a more spooky feel than the base Draugr’s design, however, they have no ability to camouflage.
Danger - 4. Access to only one shout and non-enchanted weaponry counteracts their increased health and damage.
Transform - 7. Hulking Draugr are the only visually unique from their base frame from every other Draugr. They have reddened bodies and are taller, with thick armor and thin appendages. Much higher transform.
Name - 6. Hulking (unlike Restless) gives off an impression of power, and as such is a step above the base Draugr.
Step up from Hulking. Access to Disarm, Unrelenting Force (Level 2), and Frost Breath. Increased health and damage, and basic enchanted weaponry (Ancient Nord 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow).
Spook - 6. Equal to Overlords in terms of spook. Similar armor and lack of camouflage.
Danger - 5. While his magic is weaker than some, the guaranteed enchanted weaponry and addition of Frost Breath means the Scourge Lord is a decent adversary.
Transform - 4. Basic Draugr plus armor.
Name - 5. Docked a point for old name plus lord.
Step up from Scourge Lord. Access to Frost Cloak, Disarm, Unrelenting Force (Level 3), and Frost Breath. Increased health and damage, and basic (possibly enchanted) or ebony weaponry (Ancient Nord or Ebony 1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow). (Highest level non-miniboss Draugr).
Spook - 7. Matches Overlords for visual and camouflage lacking.
Danger - 7. Frost Cloak, Powerful shouts, and possible ebony weaponry mean that the Deathlord is not one you want to face off against often.
Transform - 4. Basic Draugr plus armor.
Name - 7. While adding lord to a previous name is lame, having lord integrated uniquely is good, and Deathlord, while not the most creative, is scary.
Step up from Deathlord. Access to Frost Cloak, Disarm, Unrelenting Force (Level 3), and Frost Breath. Increased health and damage, and ebony weaponry (1 or 2 handed axes and swords, shields, or a bow)(Strongest Draugr).
Spook - 7. Matches visuals and lack of camouflage of Deathlords.
Danger - 8. Guaranteed ebony weaponry and the same magical abilities as a Deathlord makes a Death Overlord just that little bit more powerful.
Transform - 4. Basic Draugr with big armor.
Name - 3. Putting Death in front of a name is even worse than putting lord into a name. Docked many points for lack of creativity.
