A basic ghost would be the manifestation of a person after death. While their body is gone, they appear with a visual but incorporeal form. These undead are one of the oldest forms in culture, dating back to the ancient romans at least, meaning ghosts have been around for over 2000 years. Basic ghosts are also real simple in their abilities. They can fly, they can make noises (usually they can talk) and they can usually have simple physical interactions with the world, like changing temperatures, moving objects, or knocking on spooky things like windows or bed frames. Not just anybody can be a ghost though, while the roman’s thought they would be for cursing people, nowadays ghosts usually are just people’s spirits that are either really angry, really sad, or feel like they didn’t do everything they were supposed to while they were alive. Current basic ghosts in media usually are given some extra power like in Insidious ghosts can do a lot more than basic actions, and show up more like demons for a lot of them. Basic ghosts are more like Casper the Friendly Ghost visually, but with the angst of Ghost Adventures. Now is time for ranking the basic ghost.
The Spook possibilities of even a basic ghost are really strong. They can and will slowly build up the spookiness, before startling you with their pale transparent bodies. Even without much danger, ghosts can observe and learn what you fear, and whisper those things to you in the night. Plus they go Boo and startle people as a main hobby. They exist to spook, and have a specific startling thing to shout at you. Experienced undead.
And yet with so much spookiness, they have a pretty horrible danger rating. While they can scare you so hard, they can’t do much else. I guess they could go BOO while your back is to a staircase or something? But I think I am just as able to push someone down a staircase and come to the same conclusion. Basic ghosts aren’t so dangerous.
Their transformation is pretty intense and comes with some rad abilities, so ghosts get a 5. They usually look pretty similar to their living forms though, so it isn’t an overload of transformations or anything.
Finally, ghosts are a basic and so start at 5, but are pretty lame otherwise. Whenever I think of the ghost’s name, I laugh in my mind. Immediately I come to the “g-g-g-g-g-ghoooooost” idea of Scooby Doo, and it loses its intensity. Plus it has a strong o and most word with a strong o are pretty funny.
Despite the highs of their spook, basic ghosts are brought down by their lack of danger, and name that just doesn’t strike fear into my heart.
