The film takes place in North Dakota, the home of one Mr. O'Grady, an Irishman who returned from his motherland with a bag of gold he stole from a Leprechaun. The Leprechaun pursues O'Grady back to his house, killing the Irishman's wife, however, he is trapped in a crate using the Leprechaun's only weakness, a four-leaf clover. While O'Grady has since moved out, the Leprechaun, and the bag of gold, remain untouched for ten years until spoiled only daughter Tory arrives with her father to spruce up the place. After one of the painting crew awakens the Leprechaun from its slumber, Tory and the crew must fight back against the magic shoe cobbler and his tricks.
The Leprechaun is given a lot of screen time. When making a horror movie called "Leprechaun" one would hope this is the case, but still, I think it is worth mentioning as some horror killers are often shrouded in their films. This is not the case with Leprechaun, and that choice was a good one.
O'Grady shouts "GOOOOLD" at one point. Hilarious.
Jennifer Aniston just being in the movie is entertaining when cast beside a bunch of actors I have never seen in anything else. She pretty much plays Rachel from Friends and looks good doing it.
There are a few creative moments with the Leprechaun. He pogo's on a man till he dies, which is the first time I have seen such an act in a horror movie. And the forest fight with the cop was interesting. And melting into goop in the well was very cool. Lots of old SFX and it was fun to look at.
There were a few cool shots in the film I thought looked really cool. Shadow of the Leprechaun in an alley on a tricycle, Leprechaun shaped hole in the fence, and one of the moon.
Reused shots during the old home scene with the Leprechaun on the wheelchair that look very obvious.
Tory is so dumb. She flip-flops on Ozzy who always knows it's a Leprechaun, sometimes believing, and then other times not after she literally fights with a dwarf-sized man in green and gold buckled shoes.
The Leprechaun being weak to four-leaf clovers is strange to me? I thought they loved their lucky charms, but instead, it makes them melt into goop.
There is one scene where the Leprechaun has his hand chopped off in a door, and much like Evil Dead, the hand moves on its own to unlock the door and return to him. However, this is a useless moment, as the next time the Leprechaun enters the home, he teleports through the fridge. So... why unlock the door? I thought it would be a cool moment to call back to, and instead, it is useless.
Leprechaun is another horror movie for people who love horror movies. It follows the same beats, has the same benefits and drawbacks, and seems like a pretty basic 90's horror movie. No boundaries are pushed, and that is okay. Sometimes there are C- movies that you love anyway. Plus, young Jennifer Aniston.
