Coco made me nearly cry. It is a movie that follows some basic Disney pathways but still has enough to be considered a good movie that stands on its own. Within Coco, death, and undeath, are very large parts of the plot. We learn that death in Coco is simply a transition from the living world to that of the dead, and you are kept alive through people remembering you and passing on stories of your life. Because of this, re-killing an undead is very difficult, because they only die when the last living person who remembers them dies, their Final Death. Moreover, they are not very dangerous as they cannot affect the living world in any dramatic way. You can be cursed through stealing something owned by the dead and sent to the land of the dead, but this is presumably very rare.
I will be looking at the 2 undead from the movie that are focused on the most. These two being De La Cruz and Hector. I am not looking at the alebrije as they are referred to as “Spirit Guides” and from the context of the movie, I believe they guide spirits, rather than being spirits that guide people. Miguel is not being considered as he never died, simply went to the land of the dead.
De La Cruz is well put together, and wears very fancy clothing. He innately looks less intimidating than Hector but has a scarier personality. 5 is a balance of his innate nice look, but scary personality.
As I said, the danger is something that is hard to categorize as fighting can only be done in the land of the dead, and you can only die there through being forgotten. De La Cruz does have the manpower to throw Hector and Miguel in a pit though, so a little dangerous for sure. All undead can also use their detached limbs from a distance, which is pretty cool.
The undead look EXACTLY like how they look in life. Even keeping their hair and clothes in most examples, like with De La Cruz.
Both of Coco’s undead will be labeled as a 1 for their names as they are simply their living names.
The transverse of Ernesto De La Cruz, as he is more creepy looking innately, but is a nicer person in reality.
Because of his weakness brought on by being near his Final Death, and how often he falls apart, I make his danger only a 2.
Hector is slightly more transformed than Ernesto as he is being forgotten, and is ragged, limping, and has a false tooth.
Hector is just his name.
