Within the wonderful Netflix original The Haunting of Bly Manor there are 9 ghosts, some more active and some more passive and intended only on scaring the audience. To begin though, there are 2 "ghosts" that are actually just figments of the imagination of two characters.
Eddie's "ghost" is actually just the guilt of the main character projected in a visual way. I do not consider this to be a real undead, despite how cool he is. The bright lights from his glasses are from the headlights of a truck that ran him over and I just find that to be an incredibly cool idea. I wish I could rank him. Also I was a little disappointed with how he was handled. The show sets up a confrontation between the main character and Eddie, and then it never happens.
Evil Henry is also not a ghost, somewhat obviously as the character is still alive. Once again, it seems like this is a manifestation of the character's guilt, just continuously making the character feel worse, and trapping them in a time they want to get past. So sorry Evil Henry you will not be getting a ranking.
Getting rid of the rabble, we get into the 9 real ghosts tied to the manor, and their spooky, tormented undeaths.
Viola is very spooky. Faceless ghosts are spooky in general, but she is also drenched, in an old dress, and will randomly throttle anybody she approaches in her rounds of the manor.
Viola does not seek out the deaths of her victims, it seems instead that it is accidental. She is simply doing the rounds of her home, and finds someone who does not belong. She doesn’t seem to hunt down anyone specifically, but she is unstoppable in any real way, only trading her victims for more appropriate ones, or by being absorbed into a living host, who will then ultimately die, or become fully possessed, and continue the killing spree.
Viola is only changed through the loss of her facial features, however this does serve as a creepy and quite strong change.
Viola Lloyd is a clearly old name, and has an indescribable slight spookiness within it.
While she has the same unfortunate facelessness, she just sits up in the blocked off wing by herself and moans. This is still very scary, but less scary than a lake lady.
Never harms anyone, and doesn’t even seem to touch anyone from what I remember.
Same change as Viola.
Perdita sounds less ghostly than Viola. Perdita sounds too cutesy to be a good ghost name.
Peter acts very spooky in the beginning of the show, however he becomes more like a basic douche in the latter half. He looks like a normal guy, but he shows up in spooky spots, looks translucent, and smiles creepily at the main character Dani.
Peter can’t do much as he is. His plan is to possess the child Miles completely, and use him to live again, however this can only be accomplished through a mutually agreed possession. He can possess people forcefully, but it only lasts so long, and can only do what the host can naturally do.
While they can move through walls and the like, Peter looks the same as living Peter.
Peter Quint has that same level of innate and indescribable ghostliness as Viola, and so matches her name.
Rebecca is a very passive and almost nice ghost. She doesn’t seem to pop up intending to spook anybody, but can still be startling.
While Rebecca has the same abilities as Peter, she is less invested in attaining a new body, and has a weaker grip on her ghostly abilities.
Rebecca is on par with Peter in that she is now a ghost and intangible, she looks just like her living self.
Rebecca Jessel sounds like a school teacher, which she almost is. Not very ghostly, but not hilariously bad. Just a lady’s name.
Hannah is a nice lady ghost who never tries to scare anybody, she just acts like a normal lady for the majority of the show.
Hannah is the least aware of her ghostliness, and seems unable to do really any of the ghostly abilities that Peter and Rebecca are able to do, at the very least for most of the show.
Same as Peter and Rebecca for the transformation.
Hannah Grose is again not spooky but not insulting.
Plague Doctor is one of the spookier hidden ghosts, because of obviously his Plague Doctorness.
On the level of Hannah Grose in that they seem completely unable to use their offensive ghostly powers.
Loses his face, and so is a 3.
Wiki lists him as “Plague Doctor Ghost” which awards a 4. Adding ghost to the end of a name is lame, but Plague Doctors are very cool.
One of the more visible hidden ghosts, he is just a innocent little boy and as such his hidden spookiness is dampened.
Hidden ghost weakness.
Faceless ghost.
This is offensively bad. Give the child a name. He is just a Victorian boy. Even something like Charles Ghostly would be better than Victorian Boy Ghost.
I never saw this hidden ghost. But he looks to be only slightly spooky.
Hidden ghost weakness.
I assume he gets faceless but I never saw him other than his explanation scene where he has a face, so we will give him a 2.
Priest Ghost? 1. Priest is not able to carry the “Physical Characteristic Ghost” archetype.
Much spookier idea, and is never explained, which makes him even spookier.
Hidden ghost weakness.
Faceless ghost.
Soldier Ghost can barely scrape by with a 2.
