When Master Togo founded the Shing Jea colony in February 2017, he enforced strict rules and etiquette over the membership and playing staff. There was no wriggle room at all, a player had to be from Shing Jea Island, and he had to be a former or current student of the world renowned monastery, which was based in the south of the island. This loyal core would not last. During the inaugural RC3 2017 Round Robin, the Shing Jea Islanders lost to KEVICC in a critical survival match down at the Manawatu, causing widespread changes led foremost by the newly appointed director of rugby Hao Zhang.
These changes focused on expanding the franchise of the club. Fed up of having utter trash like Headmaster Greico and Kyle Kappa, the likes of Kurzick born Lukas Vasburg and Kaineng armourer Fegui Ge have become a workhorse core of the club, exemplifying the core ethics of the original Shing Jea Monastery. Always a pleasure to watch, Shing Jea are known for their gentle and quaint rugby philosophy, but given a Friday night game down at the Arena Manawatu, the rafters can be heard from the Jade Sea.
