Understanding Blinds in Texas Hold'em
In No-Limit Texas Hold'em, blinds are mandatory bets posted before the cards are dealt. They ensure there is money in the pot to compete for and help drive action. The blinds rotate around the table with each hand to maintain fairness and encourage participation.
Types of Blinds
1. Small Blind (SB)
The player directly to the left of the dealer button posts the small blind.
This is typically half the value of the big blind (ex. in a ₱50/₱100 game, the small blind is ₱50).
The small blind is a forced bet and is posted before the cards are dealt.
2. Big Blind (BB)
The player two seats left of the dealer button posts the big blind.
The big blind is the full minimum bet for that hand (e.g., ₱100 in a ₱50/₱100 game).
Like the small blind, it is also posted before any cards are dealt.
Another Type of Blinds
3. Post Blind (PB)
A Post Blind is a required bet a player must place before they can join or return to a hand. The amount is equal to the Big Blind at the table.
This rule is in place to keep the game fair and ensure that all players contribute equally over time.
When Do Players Need to Post a Blind?
Players may be required to post a blind in the following cases:
1. Joining a Table in Progress
If a player enters a table that’s already in play, they have two options:
Wait for the Big Blind to reach your seat before joining.
Post a Blind Immediately (equal to the Big Blind) to be dealt in right away.
2. Returning After Sitting Out
If the player has been away (disconnected or sitting out) and missed a blind, they will need to post a blind to resume playing.
3. Switching Seats
If a player changes seats to skip a blind, the system may require them to post a blind before allowing them to join another hand. This helps prevent players from unfairly avoiding blinds.
The post blind rule helps maintain fairness and game integrity by:
Ensuring all players contribute their share of blinds.
Preventing blind skipping through seat changes or sitting out.
Allowing new or returning players to immediately participate without waiting for the blind rotation.
