Open-ended questions are asked when the client wants to get in-depth information about how the respondent feels about a particular issue.
The response that you type in should be easy to read, understandable and should be extremely detailed. It should make the client aware of their strong and weak qualities according to their customers. The client cannot improve their services effectively if we do not collect the proper information.
The client we are conducting the survey for will read what you type in on all open-end questions. It’s ok to tell the respondent that you must type in what they say “verbatim” and to bear with you as you type and clarify their responses. Once the survey is completed, you will have the opportunity to check for typos and misspellings. However, we want you to clarify and code while on the question not wait till the end.
If you need to you can ask the respondents to slow down and repeat themselves:
• “(Respondents Name), can you please repeat what you just said. I want to make sure that I record your answer correctly.”
• “(Respondents Name), can you please slow down just a little? I want to make sure that I am able to record your complete answer.”
We will also go over a Pat Responses you can use in case the respondent gets ahead of you.
