Remember to confidently deliver your PAT response within the survey without hesitation, then continue immediately with the next question.

When in doubt use a probing technique: 

Re-Reading the Question 

Use this approach when: 

• The respondent does not appear to understand the question

• The respondent did not hear the question

• The respondent is having difficulty answering the question

Repeating the Response Categories 

Use this approach when:

• The respondent provides an answer that is not one of the listed choices

• The respondent selects two valid choices, and clarification is needed

• The respondent gives a vague or unclear answer

Stress generality 

Use this approach when:

• The respondent is unsure how to answer

• The respondent does not have a strong opinion

• Remember: you can always reassure the respondent that there are no right or wrong answers

Narrowing Down / Zeroing In 

Use this approach when:

• The respondent gives a vague answer to a question requiring a specific numeric rating
