The respondent is having difficulty answering the question

Use this approach when:
The respondent provides an answer that is not one of the listed choices
The respondent selects two valid choices, and clarification is needed
The respondent gives a vague or unclear answer
Stress generality
Use this approach when:
The respondent is unsure how to answer
The respondent does not have a strong opinion
Remember: you can always reassure the respondent that there are no right or wrong answers
