Team Building
Team Building games encourage participants to utilize the skills they have acquired through this Community Building journey. Participants should be challenged to work together as a team, communicate effectively, and practice their problem solving skills. Many activities will have varying levels of participation. Facilitators are welcome to assign roles or let the participants sort themselves out. Variety is key to these activities. Ensure participants are given space to adapt and are reminded to focus when they get carried away by the excitement of the challenge. It is vital that some sort of briefing occurs at this level of community building. Knot or Not a Knot

This activity is best with a smaller group so everyone gets a turn to explain what they believe.

In-person set-up - you will need a rope for each number of groups (6 people max per group) and space (outdoors is best) to spread each group circling around their own rope. One person at a time can walk up to the rope to investigate. They should return to their spot which is physically distanced from others.

Virtual set-up - you really only need one rope as a prop for taking pictures. Set up the rope (you can do this a number of times with and without a knot to change up the answer for each group) and take a few pictures of the rope from different angles. Prepare breakout rooms for students and add pictures of the rope for students in that group to look at and attempt to come to a consensus.

The leader (without the group watching) places the rope into a position and places a knot in the rope or just makes it look like it. The group has to come to a consensus and convince each other of the answer. They cannot touch the rope but they can look at it closely and give reasons as to why they believe it is or isn't a knot. Technically they are done the activity when each group member has the same answer. This is a good activity to use after a few other activities to ensure students are engaged and interested in succeeding as a group.

In the end whether the team figures out the correct answer or not (knot?) it's the process that really matters. Be sure to debrief this activity and focus on the process. Really, in some cases, the person picking up the rope can actually create a knot where they didn't expect a knot to be, it depends on the choice of the picker-upper. So the answer may not be definite.

The catch is that no two students can speak at the same time and a number can not be said by two different people. Students should all get a chance to say at least one number and never back-to-back. Tip for in-person: have students looking in a natural space for something unique but easily found (ie. a rock or a leaf on the ground), wherever they find this item is the spot they must sit down. *It is best that students are not in a formation that creates an easy pattern for them to use to solve this challenge.

You are welcome to give them some time to discuss strategies, but we suggest letting them jump right in, learn some things themselves, then start to process the activity as a group before establishing a plan to accomplish the task together. Remember to select a debriefing method to really dissect the experience when the challenge is completed.
