BA Primary Education with Recommendation for QTS with Foundation Year
My name is Max and I’m studying Primary School Education. I’ve always been passionate about anything artistic, especially music and art. I enjoy being creative, and I’m a big hobby enthusiast. I’m also known to be a kind person, always willing to help others.
What motivated you to study this course?
Part of my motivation came from wanting to prove to myself and others that no matter what challenges you face, whether it’s disabilities or other obstacles, you can pursue anything you set your mind to. I’ve always wanted to teach, but with my dyslexia, I wondered if that was even possible. However, after volunteering for two years and teaching children with dyslexia, I realised that even if I make mistakes, what truly matters is helping kids learn and seeing them happy. Teaching is a way to change lives, and that’s the most important part for me.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
Initially, I struggled with impostor syndrome. I came to university alone, not knowing anyone, but I pushed myself to talk to people and join different societies. In just a year, I’ve made great friends, and now we work on assignments together and meet up regularly. The support I’ve received from the university has been invaluable. The care and kindness I’ve experienced here has made me feel accepted, and now I’m able to spread that positivity to others.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I love learning all the new things about teaching that I didn’t realise were part of the profession. I enjoy coming to class early to engage fully with the material. When someone says something interesting, I listen intently because I genuinely love learning. The environment at the university has made it an enjoyable place to be.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
I absolutely love my tutors, especially Sarah and Pushpa. They’ve been a huge help, and every lecture has been a blast. The discussions in our lectures are always thoughtprovoking and interesting. I never feel singled out because of my struggles, instead, I feel accepted. Their support has made a significant impact on my experience here, and it’s been genuinely amazing. I feel comfortable, and that makes me happy.
I never thought I’d be academically successful, but after receiving my laptop from the university and getting a 2:1 on my first assignment, my confidence soared. I had struggled in previous education, but now I’m doing well, making strong friendships, and feeling more confident than ever. The small, tight-knit community at Birmingham Newman really appealed to me, and I’m enjoying my time here. I also love being involved in the Warhammer Society and running for vice-chair. Outside of University, I’ve gotten back into my hobbies, like painting, and it’s been amazing to teach my friends and enjoy life more because of everything I’m doing now. I feel like I can do it all.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
My advice is simple: Don’t let anything stop you. Whatever challenges you’ve faced in the past, leave them behind because the present is what you make of it, and the future is yours to shape. Keep pushing forward, don’t give up, and never stop trying, that’s the best approach, especially when it comes to University.
