BA Counselling Studies and Working with Children, Young People and Families with Foundation Year
Hi, I’m Faye and I am studying in the foundation year, counselling and working with children and young people and families.
What motivated you to study this course?
I've always wanted to pursue this course but didn't think it was possible since I didn't finish school. It was only when a friend, who studies here also, encouraged me to apply that I realised it was possible without any qualifications. I wanted to move away from hospitality, a field I fell into after having kids at a young age. Working in hospitality meant I missed out on my teenage years and was always busy. However now, I want to be there for my daughter and secure a better job in a field I truly love. My passion is to help young moms, as a family support worker. I want to show people that there are opportunities out there and that they can succeed.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
Yes, I had concerns because I never really completed school and always viewed university as suitable for those who succeeded academically. Being more hands-on in my working life, I doubted my ability to thrive in an academic environment. However, I realised that I could excel in both areas. The resources available at the university have been incredibly supportive. Jade has been especially helpful, providing guidance and support every step of the way. I wouldn't be here without that support.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I feel like I've enjoyed and learned a lot about myself through our studies. The course content, along with my ‘trial and error’ experiences, has taught me valuable lessons. I enjoy relating to what we are learning and discovering areas where I need to make changes. It has been insightful and enriching
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
I absolutely love my tutors Mike and Jade—they're amazing. It's the most support I've ever had in my entire educational journey. I left school at 12, so having this level of support is truly remarkable. I will miss them both next year.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
Just go for it, and you'll have excellent support. I wouldn't be here now if it weren't for Jade!
