BSc Computer Science with Foundation Year
My name is Emmelyn, and I’m currently studying a Foundation Year in Computer Science.
What motivated you to study this course?
My interest in computer science stems from my background, where I often felt deprived of opportunities. This motivated me to pursue a path where I can give back to society, especially to those from disadvantaged backgrounds. I also want to contribute to creating more space and visibility for women in the field of computer science.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
Yes, I faced several barriers, including financial challenges and being a mature student. I had taken a break from education, and when I started university, I struggled with imposter syndrome. I felt out of place and even questioned whether I belonged due to my age.
However, Birmingham Newman University was very supportive. I was able to access wellbeing appointments through the Student Success team. Being away from my family was tough, but these services helped me adjust. Gradually, I began to feel more comfortable and involved in the university community.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy the seminars in the Foundation Year, but the workshops are my favourite. They equip us with the practical skills needed for assignments and upcoming projects. I genuinely enjoy every part of the Computer Science course, especially the hands-on, practical sessions. It allows us to work independently, which I find very rewarding.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
The tutors are supportive and approachable. Overall, my experience at the university has been positive.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
I’d say go for it! I’s a beginner-friendly course with plenty of support available. If you ever need help, you’ll find additional tutoring and resources at Birmingham Newman which are available. The small class sizes make it easier to access one-on-one support. There’s a real opportunity to make an impact and feel part of something meaningful. I feel good being a part of it, I know my presence is felt
