BA Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing
My name is Jade, and I am studying counselling, mental health and wellbeing.
What motivated you to study this course?
I run a beauty business specialising in lashes, and I've noticed that people tend to feel comfortable talking to me. I really enjoy counselling because I love listening to others and helping them come to their own realisations, offering guidance along the way.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
I didn’t have many concerns, since I know everyone deals with uncertainty at first. When I came in and met everyone, they were so welcoming, and I felt at ease right away. It felt like a place where I could be myself and connect with others.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy collaborative learning. During my classes we are encouraged to hear different ideas and perspectives which really broadens my mindset and helps me think in new ways.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
I really enjoy James' lessons. His approach to learning and sense of humour create a comfortable atmosphere where you can relax and focus. He has a way of making everything easy to understand, which helps a lot. I haven’t had to access any other services so far, but I know how to if I need to.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
Just give it your all but also make sure to prioritise your own mental health by taking time for self-care and self-love. When you take care of yourself first, you’re in a better place to help and support others.
