BA Early Childhood Studies with Foundation Year
My name is Elna, and I am currently studying Early Childhood Studies.
What motivated you to study this course?
When I was 20, I became a mom for the first time, and I had a 25-year gap before becoming a mother again at 44. This motivated me to pursue this course, especially as I now have a baby and am learning so much from him, as well as about myself. I didn’t have the opportunity to study earlier when I had my first child, but now, I finally have the time to focus on my education.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
I did have some concerns, particularly around the language barrier, as I am Portuguese and studying at a UK university. However, I decided to give it a try because I knew that if I didn’t, I’d never know. The support I’ve received from Birmingham Newman University has been incredible. The university feels like a small, supportive family. Whenever I need help, there’s always someone who can guide me in the right direction. The support here is fantastic, something I don’t think I’d find in a larger university.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
The course is incredibly rewarding. I’m learning about childhood behaviors and conditions like ADHD and autism, things I never fully understood before. It’s eye-opening to learn how to better support children and babies, and I’ve come to realise that what I once thought was “normal” has so many complexities. I really enjoy discovering these new aspects and gaining a deeper understanding of childhood development.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
Helen and Sarah are amazing tutors. There’s nothing I can’t ask them—they are always ready to help or point me in the right direction. They are very patient and understanding, especially with my personal circumstances, as I live quite far away and must travel. Their support is invaluable, and I truly appreciate how accommodating they are.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
I would highly recommend studying at Newman. The first year has been incredibly rewarding, and the university has a unique, family-like atmosphere. It’s much more personal and supportive compared to larger institutions. The Early Childhood Studies course is engaging, and the tutors make it easy to follow and enjoyable. The Foundation Year classes are the best, they’re fun, and the people are great. I honestly don’t want to think about leaving for the summer or not seeing my classmates. Initially, I considered starting my first year at another university closer to home, but after experiencing Birmingham Newman University, I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. It’s worth the travel, and I’m happy here.
