BSc Psychology and Counselling with Foundation Year
My name is Gabriela and I am studying Psychology and Counselling.
What motivated you to study this course?
I’ve always been fascinated by human behavior and wanted to pursue a subject that explores why people behave the way they do. I’m particularly interested in understanding the triggers behind certain actions and how different factors influence behavior.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
One of my initial concerns was the language barrier, as English is my second language. I worried about whether I would be able to communicate effectively and keep up with my studies. At the beginning, it felt daunting, but now I can see how much my English has improved, especially during the first month. I am really grateful to be here and for the opportunity to challenge myself and expand my limits.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy the group work. Collaborating with other students has been a great experience, as everyone brings unique perspectives and ideas to the table. It’s inspiring to hear different stories and viewpoints, and it has greatly enhanced my learning.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
The tutors are fantastic—very helpful, approachable, and open to addressing any concerns we have. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how cooperative and positive they are. Their support has made a big difference in my university experience.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
My advice would be simple: don’t overthink it, just go for it! You won’t regret it.
