BA Working with Children Young People and Families with Foundation Year, transferring to BSc Sports Science
My name is Henry, and I am in my Foundation Year studying Working with children, young people and families, however, I will be studying Sports Science from September.
What motivated you to study this course?
My motivation came from my experience working with children and young people. I enjoy seeing their progress and knowing I'm part of it, especially as I coach my children during their football training at a football academy. Gaining knowledge about the mental and emotional aspects is both interesting and important to me for my degree. Being able to make a difference in someone’s life is truly motivating.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
It was daunting since I haven't been in education for a while, but I knew I enjoyed learning, even though I'm not a big reader. When I finished the application, I was excited. Being contacted by the tutors, James and Jade, was incredibly helpful. They helped settle me in and really made me feel like I belonged and that I was ready to do this.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy both classes within the Foundation Year and the degree subject, working with children, young people and families. There are lots of discussions and debates, which I really enjoy. I learn a lot from each other as we share personal experiences that we can relate to, and it's all within context.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
Awesome! I haven’t been to any other University, but from what I’ve heard from friends and colleagues, they don’t always get the same level of support. There are a lot of opportunities that keep popping up, which is great because it gives students the chance to progress while learning. I think that’s a big plus of being here, and the environment is friendly. Mike, my degree subject tutor is brilliant, as well as James who is good at engaging with the class and encouraging class discussions.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
I would say give it a go, no matter what level you’re at. The term "foundation year" is just the start, and helps you move on to your degree subject with a solid foundation. You learn the basics, and whatever degree subject you are doing, you need to know those basics. The foundation is always key.
