BSc Health and Social Care with Foundation Year
Hi, my name's Corrine and I'm originally from east London and I study Health and Social Care foundation year.
What motivated you to study this course?
I’ve always wanted to study nursing since seeing how the nurses took care of my nan when I was younger. This is what inspired me to work in health care. When I left school, I didn’t think I would ever go to university, but I watched all my friends go, so that also motivated me to study further so that I can get a qualification. I thought Birmingham Newman University was lovely, and it is local to my cousin, this is one of the reasons I chose to come here.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
I was concerned with my maths grade as I don’t have it yet and it is a requirement for the course. I contacted the programme lead Kevin, who reassured me that Birmingham Newman offered the maths support alongside my studies.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I like Pushpa’s seminars as it gives us a chance to get to know everyone and work in groups so that we can share ideas. I also like the discussions that we have in my health and social care.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
I find the tutors are good and helpful. I can tell the lecturers are really passionate about what they are teaching us. I like the university a lot, there’s lots of support, activities to do and societies you can join. I am part of the Christian society where we meet and talk over tea and cake.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
The advice I would give is that if you are a mature student don’t feel like you're old or out of place. Before coming here, I felt that this would be the case but then I see so many students who are older than me and everyone is so lovely. If you work hard, you will succeed and be where you want to be.
