BA Criminology with Foundation Year
My name is Dylan, and I'm studying Criminology in the foundation year. As someone born in the 1980s, I’m entering as a mature student without the traditional GCSE or A-level qualifications.
What motivated you to study this course?
I attended an open day where they explained the application process. The staff were lovely and offered me an unconditional place within three days, which was impressively fast. I've always been interested in understanding why reoffenders reoffend and exploring early interventions to prevent offenses from happening in the first place.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
Initially, I was concerned about my personal capabilities, sensing that something was amiss in my educational background but not being able to pinpoint it. The university has been incredibly supportive in addressing these concerns. Natalie from Student Success has been particularly helpful, exploring different options and getting a proper understanding of my situation to provide the necessary support. They are committed to helping me manage and overcome any educational barriers I might face.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I really appreciate the honest constructive feedback, which allows me to develop and grow my skills and self-belief. I often receive this feedback from Frankie and the other tutors. I've also been networking and getting to know people, including a second-year psychology student who invited me to join him and other students. The environment is relaxing.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
The staff are lovely, and my tutors have all been brilliant from my personal experience. The library is fantastic, with always someone ready to help you. You can book reference appointments, and they teach you how to help yourself
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
Come in on an open day, you will be amazed at how supported you will feel during the process. As soon as you start, you will grow in confidence and be so impressed with yourself.
