BSc Psychology and Childhood Studies with Foundation Year
My name is Lucy, and I am studying Psychology and Childhood Studies.
What motivated you to study this course?
My interest in childcare, particularly in working with children with special educational needs (SEN), motivated me to pursue this course. I’m fascinated by how the brain works in relation to SEN and trauma, and my goal is to become a play therapist. I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of these areas, and I know that studying psychology will open many different career paths for me.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
Yes, I struggled with anxiety and autism, which made fitting in a bit challenging for me. However, Jade has been a huge support, and I honestly don’t think I’d be where I am today without her help. She’s been a constant source of guidance and encouragement, and I’m incredibly grateful for her support.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy Frankie’s class, as it’s where I feel most comfortable socialising. The Foundation year has been great in helping me develop study skills, which I’ve benefited from. I need things to be interactive, and Frankie does a fantastic job of pushing us to engage. During my one-on-one sessions, we set personal targets and goals, and I appreciate how Frankie encourages me to interact more, especially in group settings.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
Jade has been absolutely amazing and has been my biggest supporter throughout this journey. She’s always there when I need someone to talk to. Frankie is also a great tutor, he’s very funny and brings a unique approach to teaching. He’s always responsive to emails and makes sure to answer any questions, no matter how small they may seem. It’s reassuring to know that no question is ever too trivial.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
My advice would be to be open and not hesitate to reach out, especially to the foundation team, particularly Jade, who has been a huge help to me. It’s also wonderful to mix with people from different age groups and cultural backgrounds, as it broadens your horizons and helps you learn about new perspectives. It’s an enriching experience that you’ll appreciate both personally and academically.
