Interview with Alix Wyatt

What is your name, and what are you studying? 

My name is Alix, and I am pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. 

Why did you choose your course? 

I chose to study law because of my passion for justice and desire to positively impact society. Law provides a framework for resolving conflicts, protecting individual rights, and promoting fairness and equality. Studying law equips me with the knowledge and skills to address complex legal issues and contribute to positive change in my community. 

What did Foundation Year mean to you?  

As a mature student, Foundation Year played a pivotal role in my academic journey, bridging my previous experiences and the demands of higher education. Having been out of formal education, I recognised the importance of refreshing my foundational knowledge and skills before starting a law degree. Foundation Year provided me with precisely that opportunity. For someone returning to education after a hiatus, this foundation was essential in helping me regain my academic footing and feel prepared for the challenges ahead. 

Moreover, Foundation Year was a platform for honing essential study skills and time management techniques. As a mature student balancing academic pursuits with other responsibilities, such as work or family commitments, mastering effective study habits was paramount. Foundation Year offered guidance and support, teaching me strategies for efficient notetaking, research, and exam preparation. These skills prove invaluable as I progress through my degree, enabling me to manage my workload effectively and maintain a healthy work-life-study balance. 

Additionally, Foundation Year bolstered my academic confidence, instilling in me the belief that I could succeed in higher education despite the challenges of returning to learning later in life. Foundation Year fostered a sense of belonging and empowerment through small class sizes, supportive tutors, and a nurturing learning environment. This newfound confidence propelled me forward, giving me the resilience and determination to overcome obstacles and thrive in my academic pursuits. 

Overall, Foundation Year was more than just a preparatory course—it was a transformative experience that laid the groundwork and gave me the academic foundation, study skills, and confidence necessary to excel in higher education and pursue my passion for law.  

Knowing what you know now, what would you have told yourself at the start of your Foundation Year? 

Looking back on my Foundation Year, I would advise myself to embrace every opportunity for learning and personal growth. I would encourage myself to seek guidance from tutors, engage actively in class discussions, and take advantage of extracurricular activities and networking opportunities. I would also remind myself to stay organised, manage my time effectively, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. 

What’s been the highlight of your studies so far?  

The highlight of my first year of law degree studies has been the opportunity to delve into the intricacies of legal principles and their practical application. From engaging in thought-provoking class discussions to participating in moot court competitions, every aspect of the program has contributed to my growth and understanding of the law. Additionally, connecting with passionate tutors and fellow students who share my enthusiasm for the legal field has been incredibly rewarding. Overall, the highlight has been the journey of discovery and personal development that comes with studying law.

What are your plans for the future?  

My aspirations for the future involve leveraging my law degree to contribute positively to society while exploring different career paths within the legal sector. I am committed to making a meaningful impact in whichever avenue I choose, whether through legal practice, policy advocacy, or other avenues. Additionally, I am open to furthering my education or pursuing specialised training programs to broaden my horizons and discover my passions in the legal field.
