BA Counselling Studies and Working with Children, Young People and Families with Foundation Year
My name is Kym, and I'm currently in my foundation year studying Working with Children, Young People, and Families.
What motivated you to study this course?
I initially started with a different degree subject, but it didn’t feel like the right fit for me. After speaking with Jade, we came up with a plan for me to sit in on a class from another degree and it immediately felt natural to be there.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
I was really nervous about joining the degree six weeks into the course, but Jade’s support made all the difference. She even came with me to my first session, without her, I don’t think I would’ve gone through with it.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
I really enjoy learning new things, especially the counselling skills aspect, which I’ve found incredibly valuable. It’s helped me understand that counselling isn’t just about giving advice, it’s about truly listening. The 'Education in Society' module was also a real eye-opener. It went beyond education and introduced me to important skills like group work and essay writing. The foundation year has been a huge help. Without it, I don’t think I would’ve felt ready to move on to the degree.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
Everyone has been incredibly supportive, even the tutors who aren’t directly involved in my course have been really helpful. Whenever I’ve had a question, if they didn’t have the answer themselves, they always knew someone who did and pointed me in the right direction.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
