BSc Health and Social Care with Foundation Year
Hi, my name is Rebecca. I’m a single mom to a 9-year-old daughter. I’ve had a vision impairment since birth and have lived with it my whole life. I’ve always wanted to earn a degree so I can have a stable job and be a role model for my daughter. Despite the challenges of being a single parent and visually impaired, I’m determined to build a better future for both of us. I am currently studying a Health and Social Care course.
What motivated you to study this course?
What has always motivated me is the dream of starting my own business. I chose Health and Social Care because I believe it can help me make a real difference, especially for people like me. I’m passionate about supporting refugees and asylum seekers, and I want to work in a role where I can offer help, guidance, and hope to those going through difficult transitions.
Did you have any concerns or barriers when thinking about joining your course, and how did the university help you?
Yes, having a vision impairment, I honestly thought I might feel left out or excluded. I didn’t know what to expect. I had seen a lot of adverts from Birmingham Newman University featuring student experiences, and at first, I assumed it was just a marketing strategy. But now that I’ve experienced it myself, I see how much support is actually available. I wish I hadn’t waited so long to apply for the course. The tutors and support team really help guide you toward where you want to be.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy the most?
To be honest, I enjoy the Foundation Year class more than anything. I wish it could continue throughout the entire University journey. I look forward to Tuesdays every week because the atmosphere is amazing. The students are so friendly, it truly feels like one big family. Helen is absolutely angelic. It’s the best class I’ve ever been part of, from the students to the tutors, everyone is so supportive. It genuinely feels like home.
How are you finding your tutors, and the university in general?
They’ve been incredibly helpful, especially Jade and Helen. They’ve played a big part in my journey here. I feel so much more confident now compared to when I first started.
What advice would you give anyone considering studying your course at Birmingham Newman?
Honestly, I don’t think you should waste time overthinking or debating it. Just go for it, Birmingham Newman University will support you in achieving your goals and making your dreams a reality.
