Why dilutions are needed
Solutions purchased from manufacturers are often only of certains concentrations. However, a range of other concentrations might be required for experiments in the lab.Â
Depending on the type of experiment, stock solutions can be diluted in a simple or serial manner.Â
In your context, simple dilutions are usually required to prepare a range of concentrations with regular intervals. In this case, the dilution factor is not the same for each dilution.
Serial dilutions involve diluting a stock solution and its subsequent diluted solutions by the same dilution factor each time. The resulting concentrations will have irregular intervals within a larger range.Â
