On Trying to Do Good
18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
Jesus did not go around a lot and say this person was good, or I see the goodness in that person...Jesus is specific when He spoke about the goodness and who is good...When Jesus was ask about Him being good, He tells us that only God is good...Jesus made this statement, as a matter of fact...It is a statement on Truth, the only Truth...Only in God and in the Trinity of God can we really find goodness...
St. Paul says in loving God and in doing His will -we can find goodness...But God is that source of this goodness...St. Paul does not say that this person or that person is good...And according to Jesus, His Father is our moral compass..He did not say that God was the only thing good in the universe to make us feel bad....He said it, I think, to teach us without God, man has no standard, no baseline, no moral compass...
I personally believe, that God is this source of goodness felt inside each of our hearts...Goodness cannot just come out of thin air, is not here by randomness, and does not and has not evolved in man...Goodness has a basis and it is from our LORD and Father in heaven...God is good...
God created us in His image, so we sense and are haunted by the goodness of His image in us...We want to be good...Because He created mankind in His own image, we are tormented by this goodness in our conscious and in our daily lives...We always want to be good, but we cannot...As St. Paul writes, even though we always try to do good, evil is right there with us and in us...We have a sinful nature...But the Holy Spirit in us, is always seeking this Truth and this Good...The Holy Spirit recognizes this Goodness...
So humanity seems to want to do good but struggles regularly and consistently with always being good...We are flawed by sin...Our Father and Jesus do not sin...That is why Jesus said only God is good...Only God can rule the universe with His perfect goodness...Without this perfect goodness, there would be much more evil...And all the while He is running and maintaining our universe, with His perfect goodness, mankind is seeking for that goodness and that feeling of goodness from its very Source...We try to find it in different things and material things -but those things are like idols...We sometimes work hard and long to suppress this restlessly of this "Goodness search in our hearts"... But it remains...Our own mind regularly tell us that there must be Something More...There is Something More...Jesus reminds us that there is One Source and only One Source, where Goodness comes from...
