Mark 10:1-12
Divorce
1 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.
2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
3 "What did Moses command you?" he replied.
4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."
5 "It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. 6 "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' 7 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."
Genesis 2:18-25
It is Not Good for Man to Be Alone
18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
Jesus crossed the Jordan into Judea and crowds of people came to Him...He did what He usually and customarily did, He taught them...Almost everywhere He went people flocked to see Him and hear His wisdom and what He had to say...Even the Pharisees were following Him and testing Him with questions...
Man and woman are in God's creation (Genesis 1:27)...Marriage and the joining of man and woman is also a part of the beginning (Genesis 2:24)...The original relationship of man and woman was created by God...In the paradise of the Garden of Eden, there was only one man and one woman, therefore, divorce could not be...God said it was not good for man to be alone...Jesus uses the creation story to teach us the importance and seriousness of marriage and the vows we make...Adam was with Eve and a part of creation...Divorce was not a part of creation, but marriage was...
Therefore, God has joined man and woman in marriage from the very start...God ties the marriage knot...For this reason, since He is the One who unites male and female in marriage the two are to become one flesh...Since man and female are now husband and wife they are no longer two, but now one...Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate...
God is perfect, this world is not perfect...God would always have the husband and wife after marriage to remain united...Jesus tells us that Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away...Jesus says Moses permitted, Moses did not command...Jesus also implies (since Moses permitted this, it was not God) that God is perfect and would not allow divorce as the law allowed...Moses permitted that man had to write out legal papers to get a divorce...This would make it more difficult for a man to divorce his wife...Moses knew man's hearts are hard and this is why he finally wrote this law...If we were completely pure in heart, we would only get married when it was permanent and when we get married the pure heart would not get divorced...Divorce is permitted, by Moses, because man's heart are hard and not pure...
Jesus did not come to condemn the world, He came to save our world (He did not condemn this action of divorce, but is explaining the divorce action)...Jesus did this through His teachings and His ministering to us...That was and is His custom...He continues to do this today through the Scripture...Specifically, the four gospels are a biography of Him...
Since the creation and since the beginning, God has made marriage...God's creating the marriage between Adam and Eve, makes marriage a sacred thing...Of all God's creations, this is His most intimate of relationships...How could any man, or any woman break up what God has done?...
