I've always loved Skaven, such great character to them. The pettiness, agression and infighting is all great and makes a really fun starting point. So much interesting character to write into armies and even/especially factions within the army. I was drawn to Clan Skryre early, their zany inventions and fantastical use of technology is hilarious. The doomwheel is the pinacle of this. Also, I really enjoy randomness and the ability to inflict high casualties into either the enemy or myself. The push your luck of the ratling gun is a great little addition, really puts you in control compared to something like an organ gun. You feel the rush of excitement that the gunner would be experiencing at the time.
I remember having the 6th edition army book on a road trip to Melbourne and reading it cover to cover and just being absolutely engrossed in it that I missed all the specatacular scenery outside the car.
This army has been around for a long time. I think it may have been my second or third proper army. It was great fun at the time, because a friend also started his skaven army then, so we'd have some great rivalries between Clan Skryre and Clan Moulder. It wasn't until the Dark Continent campaign we ran in our group that I fully developed a background for the army separate to Clan Skryre.
Also, Grey Seer Thanquol is definitely my favourite character in the whole of WFB. If you haven't read his novels, do.
Lord Snikkit was charged with retrieving warpstone from the southlands by Ikit Claw. After building himself a strong base on the coast Snikkit moved inland, running into a small Clan Pestilens outpost. By convincing them to join his cause they took control of the Ancient Pyramid where he found his shiny shield.
Snikkit successfully avoided assassination at the hands of the supposed allies the Dark Elves while stationed in the southlands, but retrieved the warpstone and returned to the Old World before he had a chance to exact vengeance.
After returning to the Old World, Snikkit was promoted to the rank of Warlord and now commands one of Clan Skryre’s many armies.
Trusted advisor of Snikkit, has fought alongside his general on countless battlefields before the Southlands mission and earnt the right to carry his personal standard into battle.
Fizzel accompanied Snikkit to the southlands due to recent indiscretions within the laboratories of Clan Skryre. He was refused entry back into the laboratories upon his return to the old world, so has remained with Snikkit who has provided him with the opportunity to start his own laboratory. A winning situation for all involved, Skryre got rid of a troublesome engineer, but can still lay claim to his inventions, Fizzel gets greater freedom and Snikkit gets a lieutenant who owes him his life.
The first attempt on Fizzel’s life occurred when a faulty WarpLightning Cannon “misfired” sending a bolt of lightning his way. Luckily he was able to put enough clan rats between himself and the bolt.
The not so trusted apprentice of Fizzel, Zitleek is entrusted with the more dangerous inventions, fulfilling two roles; weapons testing and out of harm’s way.
The first test of the doomrocket seemed to go well. Reports are sketchy as before being able to witness its destructive power Zitleek panicked and fled only to be wounded by a dark elf crossbow.
Upon his successful return to Skavenblight with warpstone from the Southlands Snikkit was gifted a Doomwheel by Ikit Claw. Snikkit entrusted Kasqit with the new machinery as he was the only one truly mad enough to drive it.
Initial testing proved there was much work to be done before the Doomwheel became a force to be reckoned with. The machine is susceptible to arrow fire, and becomes quickly clogged with slaves rendering it useless.
Gnawlitch Shun is a rather pompous, arrogant Grey Seer who has been tasked by the Grand Seerlord with keeping an eye on the workings of Clan Skryre. Ikit Claw has worked hard to ensure the council sent him a willing yet malleable representative, and after many lab explosions he finally got what he needed. When Ikit Claw needs to keep the council blind for a while Gnawlitch Shun gets sent out to Snikkit where he’s safely out of the way. While in Snikkit’s care, Gnawlitch Shun gets treated like royalty, Snikkit often feeds his ego by allowing Gnawlitch Shun to lead Snikkit’s armies onto the field of battle atop a Screaming Bell, specially crafted by Snikkit and his engineers. The Bell has a special “treat” built into it, ready for the day when Ikit Claw deems Gnawlitch Shun has outlived his usefulness
Far to the south of the Old World, south of Araby and the Land of the Dead, lie the Southlands. To the inhabitants of the old world this is a vast and mysterious land. Few brave the tempestuous seas of the South. There are only a handful of human colonies in the Southlands, clinging to the western coast. Arabian merchants maintain a number of small settlements which serve as havens for their ships. The Empire has established the enclave of Sudenberg as well as the dreaded penal colony of Leopaldheim. Attempts to explore the continent’s interior have proven unsuccessful. Those adventurers who have returned describe trackless jungles filled with deadly plants and animals. Tales tell of the savage lizard-men and their ancient temple cities in the midst of the rain forest and of the great High Elf fortresses in the south. Then there are rumours of Karak Zorn, the fabled lost hold of the Dwarfs, high in the Great Mountains. Yet there are darker powers at work in the Southlands. In the depths of the jungle are tribes of savage beastmen and devotees of the Chaos gods. The Skaven Clan Pestilens fled to the Southlands after their defeat in Lustria and have remained there ever since.
Your task in this campaign will be either to either establish a colony for a non-native race or to defend your territory against invasion as a native race.
I used this force in our small Southlands Campaign designed and run by George. It was great fun, with a nice balance of actions between games, exploration and hidden goals. But still plenty of fun games to play.
Chieftain Snikkit, new orders. Forget the worthless man things, the Council has heard tales of much warpstone to the south. You must get it quick-quick, before the council order it for themselves. Throt also want warpstone
Warpstone hidden in jungle south of dead things, strange creatures there. Followers of Pestilens live there too, easy to manipulate, minds badly diseased and rotting. Use them, then kill them, Pestilens not good slaves, cause other slaves to rot.
Take-take cannon. Ratling guns and poison wind globes help with dwarf things in tunnels. I also have trouble with few engineers take them too, perhaps they die there. I send supplies to Cripple Peak, you pick up supplies there, yes-yes?
Take this sword, test it on the slave I sent with the message… Good-good yes? Will kill many creatures with this blade.
Bring me warpstone quick-quick.
Ikit Claw
Chief Warlock
Buboneek Pus was “convinced“ to join Warlord Snikkit in his quest to obtain the warpstone in the Southlands. He cannot be trusted! The lords of decay secretly sent on a mission back to the Old World with Snikkit, as a spy, he has been given the shadow magnet to make sure he can roam Snikkit’s lair with freedom. For the moment Buboneek sees the wisdom in Snikkit’s plans and will aid him … for the moment.
Quickpaw is on permanent assignment with Clan Skryre, both as a hired sword and a spy for the Nightlord. Quickpaw accompanied Snikkit on his mission to the Southlands, where he was tasked with ending the threat of Snikkit’s many enemies. While in the Southlands, Quickpaw’s assignment was to ensure the warpstone made it back to Skavendom but into the hands of the Nightlord. To ensure his success he staged an assassination attempt on Snikkit’s life and blamed the Dark Elves. The intention was to completely undermine Snikkit’s rule and bring his allies down upon him. Unfortunately his plan failed and Quickpaw has fallen out of favour with the Nightlord, hence his current assignment. Fortunately for Quickpaw Snikkit never suspected a thing.
Successful Assassinations:
Dwarf Runesmith in the Southlands Campaign
Scar Veteran in the Southlands Campaign (after a botched attempt by the dark elves)
Skink Priest in the Southlands Campaign– only managed to blind him
Orc Big Boss in the Southlands Campaign
Warlord Snikkit launches his assault into Averland at the behest of his benefactor Ikit Claw. This is part of a planned assault on the region by the Council itself with many clans taking part. Snikkit aims to ensure Gnawlitch Shun is kept out of the way until Snikkit can claim the glory for himself
Grey Seer Thanquol, atop his new and improved Boneripper, brings together two local skaven clans (Warlord Snikket's and Grey Seer Tourratts) to try and topple the Dwarfs of the Blackwall mountains
Grey Seer Gnawlitch Shun launches an attack on the Grand Trade Hall of lost Karak Eight Peaks, he encounters Dwarf resistance as well as Spiders!
Warlord Snikket joins Crone Hellebron and Malekith in assaulting the town of Hagendorf, defended by High Elves, Dwarfs and Lizardmen.
Probably the scene of one of my greatest moments, an absolutely perfect Doom Rocket firing.
