Welcome!
Where do I start?
Hi my name is Will I live in Adelaide, South Australia, and I have an addiction to dice, Warhammer (and board games)...... Which you might do as well if you're reading this. So lets dive into this addiction together.
I would have been all of 11 when a friend introduced me to Warhammer. It was a heady time back then, buying random models that looked cool, covering the models with so much paint half the details disappeared and playing strange games of 'floorhammer'. I can't remember exactly what my first models were, but the old 4th edition fantasy plastic goblin box was definitely really early. From there I bounced between night goblins and The Empire until the 6th ed starter box came out. Sometime after that landed I saved up all my money, bought the box and never looked back. Next we started playing actual games rather than pushing a handgunner, 10 goblins and a wolf chariot against some dwarfs and rolling dice. The Idol of Gork campaign pack was a very early purchase, it was definitely my first terrain set, with many battles fought around those huts and idols.
After that the years blended together, I found some fellow warhammerists at high school and we became great friends, built on a strong foundation of grey plastic and goblin green paint. We played so many games on the blue table tennis table at mum and dad's, the floor or the pool table at a friends, all on scrapped together terrain.
With jobs throughout high school and uni before becoming an engineer, I'm ashamed at the amount of plastic (and metal and resin) toys I've purchased over the last couple of decades. Unfortunately for my wallet I'm a hobby butterfly, always flitting from project to project, with my favourite army being the next one. I love planning and writing and creating and as a result I rarely finish projects. Hopefully this blog will push me to finish at least one army before moving on to the next.
From a gaming perspective I am first and foremost a Warhammer Fantasy Battle player. I absolutely fell in love with the lore and enjoyed each edition, but certainly remember more of 8th than any other. Through the early years I developed an irrational fear of the phrase Outnumbered by a fear causing unit that still plagues me to this day. I really enjoyed End Times and completely understand why it happened. I bear no grudge, but Age of Sigmar didn't call to me like WFB did. I wasn't keen to commit to a new setting and was a little frustrated early that I wouldn't get any new 8th ed units. But I had plenty to go on with and the group I play with were of a similar mind, so we've kept WFB somewhat alive amongst ourselves. However it has fallen to the wayside and been overrun by the ceramite juggernaught of 40k.
My immediate gaming circle were keener on 40k than I was, and had a long history with it. So I guess I was the one holding that back to a degree, but eventually I took the plunge with the 6th edition rule book and jumped into Blood Angels. I can't remember why at the time, probably because they are similar to my Vampire Counts. I've embraced 40k and really enjoy the direction it's taking (though perhaps not so keen on the super marine-heavy release schedule, or the massive bloat of required books).
Personally, my style leans heavily into the narrative end of the spectrum, however I still like to be competitive. I like to plan my armies and build their stories, converting and kit bashing as often as I can. Most of the games we play are standard scenarios with evenly matched sides and I often get frustrated when I've pigeon holed an army too much and it constantly gets beaten. But I move on quickly and plan the next conversion or army. I've started writing many many campaigns over the last two decades, one of which has even been played.
Also, as someone with an average memory, I've been trying to take as many photos as I can of games we play. There were so many great games we had that I've forgotten about, or moments that have disappeared into the mists of time. But I'm determined to change that, so hopefully there will be some short narrative battle reports on here in the future.
So I'll leave it there for now, feel free to browse around and check out what I've put up so far, and thank you for the support.
