Orcs and Goblins were one of my first armies (technically). It was a weird start, I was young. The first GW kit I got was the 4th edition plastic goblin box. I sat on this for a while just painting it before really getting into the hobby at the start of 6th edition fantasy with Empire properly and Goblins randomly.
With the 6th Ed starter box I had a nice portion of Orcs to add to the random goblins I had collected, and finally with 7th edition releases (araknarok, boar boyz etc) tidied up Orcs and Goblins.
It was somewhere in here that our group played a short lived fantasy campaign. My orcs were hard up against the Dwarf capitol, which meant all of my turns were spent leaving a garrison there to stop the dwarf army. Not the most exciting of campaigns, but did meant I got to spend some time writing up some fluff for them.
Recently I've pulled together the various Orc and Goblin tribes I've worked on into a mighty WAAAGH! and with the introduction of contrast paints have looked back at moving them forward from the army of black primed units that its been for over a decade.
I've got quite a rag tag bunch of greenskins going on. Stuff scattered around several campaigns and settings. So I decided to sit down and organise them.
Right at the top of the pile is Warboss extraordinaire, Drog Facemangler the Savagely Vengeful at the head of Drog's Ironskinz.
Drog Facemangler the Savagely Vengeful, Orc Warboss
His rise was swift. Forced from his native lands by the expanding race of humans Drog fought several brutal campaigns against the invaders, but was eventually driven out with just a handful of his Ironskinz left. With anger burning within him he has pledged to both Gork and Mork, or is it Mork and Gork, that he will wipe all humans from the face of the earth.
Fleeing east through the mountains he settled his boyz in a small clearing in the Snaring Woods, where unbeknownst to him Ol’ Zargok was waiting for him. Zargok, the centre of a web of minor goblin tribes loosely known as Zargok’s Sneaky Society, used this network in order to help Drog consolidate the local tribes together to forge a WAAAGH! unseen in these lands in generations.
Gitnurk Beastkicka, Orc Warboss on Boar Chariot
For Centuries the land North of the River Stahl and South of the Northern Mountains has been the home of the greenskins. Many believe that the Greenskin race were spawned from Da Great Idol millenia ago, long before the coming of the Dwarfs or the birth of chaos. It didn't take long for the greenskin plague spread to every corner of the
known world. Many different tribes lived and fought in the region. Da Mangy Fangs roamed the northern wastes, A great tribe of night goblins, the Yeller Moonz, cohabited the Northern Mountains with the Blackhands contesting the rule of the Dwarfen empire, and orc tribes too numerous to count roamed the plains and the outskirts of Snaring Woods.
The ruins of an ancient castle stand in the centre of the greenskin land. It has been known by many names over the ages as different tribes laid claim to it. But none were more renowned than Ol' Rotgut. This warlord was the single greatest Orc Warlord ever to inhabit the Realm. His name is synonymous with all that is Orcish, and is still spoken with fear by the men of the empire. He still has many outstanding grudges in the books of the dwarfs and even the elves of the Forest felt his wrath deep within their forest home. Rotgut proclaimed the Castle, later named in his honour, to be the capitol of a new Orcish Empire. and it was to this fort that the tribes of the surrounding lands travelled to be a part of the mighty Waaagh! they could all feel building.
However it seemed that while Ol' Rotgut was a mighty Warlord with countless victories to his name, over time he became more content to sit in his fort and watch the tribes gather to him , feeding his ego. After weeks of waiting, the tribes encamped around Rotgut's fort became restless and fights began to erupt. It wasn't long before these fights
erupted into an all out battle. The brawl lasted many days and nights and by its end hundreds of thousands of orc and goblin bodies lay strewn around the fort. Rotgut himself lay dead, for he had come out to 'see wot all da rakkit' was about and got caught up the battle. What few tribes remained soon drifted off back to their own lands having sated their battle lust for a while.
Da Big Brawl as the fight became known had two lasting consequences. Firstly, those that survived were either very tough or very sneaky. This resulted in some very 'ard tribes roaming the plains for years to come. One such tribe was led by the Warboss Luknark Blackhand. He earned his honorific during Da Big Brawl when he throttled a young
inexperienced Orc Shaman. The shaman was desperately trying to pry Luknark's hand loose when, with his garbled, choked words, accidentally activiated the ancient powers hidden within his ring. The resultant fireball engulfed the shaman and burnt Luknark's right hand. While Luknark survived with only a slightly charred hand, the shaman fared
much worse, though badly burnt he was still alive and crawled his way to safety. There are tales that his shaman is still alive. Secondly, with such a cull on orc numbers, the surrounding lands became sparsely populated. This effect was most pronounced in the northern plains where the numbers of monsters increased dramatically. Other races also saw the lack of Orc tribes as a chance to stake their claim on the now vacant lands
For centuries warbosses and their tribes rose and fell like the moons. Many tribes have continued their existence in the land North of the River Stahl. But a new warboss bringing with him a new tribe is spoken of amongst the shamans of the remaining tribes. Gitnurk Beastkicka
Gitnurk's story is largely unknown. He rode in from the North East with a small cadre of hardened boar boyz he calls his Riderz, and a caravan full of all manner of monstrous heads. He fought his way south through the monster-infested plains, then through the Pass and rode into Ol' Rotgut's Fort, claiming it as his own. While true to his orcish nature he loves a good fight, there's nothing that excites Gitnurk more than giving a
monster a sound kickin'. Gitnurk appears outwardly cold and slightly dim. His leadership skills are lacking, even for an orc, its almost as if he is unaware of his bretheren around him. Yet somehow his boyz manage to get the job done more often than not. Whether this says more about his boyz or that they have shared instincts is unknown. It seems Gitnurk leads by example, and nothing gets his boyz more pumped up than seeing their boss give a monster a good thumpin'.
No one, probably not even Gitnurk, knows whether Gitnurk is building a new Waaagh! or just riding around clubbing stuff, but many surrounding tribes have drifted to his banner and now fight for him (whether Gitnurk knows it or not). The first tribe to do so was that of Zargok. This crusty, scarred and slightly crispin old shaman has lived in this land for longer than any living orc can remember. He believes himself to be in
constant contact with both Gork and Mork, though apparently he gets on better with Mork. it was during one of his lengthy conversations with Mork that he learned of the coming arrival of Gitnurk and has been preparing for the Waaagh! that will surely follow.
Long before Gitnurk arrived Zargok has been using his team of sneaky gits to bring word of Gitnurk's arrival to the neighbouring tribes. In carrying out Mork's plan he hopes to become a powerful shaman again.
After riding into a Storm of Magic, hot on the trail of a monstrous Araknarok, Gitnurk proceeded to thump an unwitting Terrorgheist. This act inadvertently saved Snarky the Vindictive and his tribe the Many Legz who have now joined with Gitnurk's Riderz.
Wolflord Skuxgit, Goblin Big Boss on Wolf
I don't actually have any models for this, but have always wanted a wolfboyz force.
Grizgutz Stuntystompa, Night Goblin Warboss
After finding (stealing) himself a mighty sword. Grizgutz left (was kicked out of) the tribe to find some more night goblins. Grizgutz wandered a long time in the tunnels beneath the worlds edge mountains where he met various night goblin bands he managed to cow into line. With a small gang of goblins at his back, he next met Racknid the Rancid and his tribe of subterranean spider riders, who, after getting a good kicking from Grizgutz pledged to join him and be safe from his magical blade. In a sign of goodwill (which could just be seen beneath the bruises Grizgutz had inflicted) Racknid offered Grizgutz his prized Amulet.
Grizgutz and his new tribe continued to travel the tunnels until they found the tribe of Odjit the Shaman. Being addicted to various forms of fungus and mushroom and as a result being extremely flighty, even for a Night Goblin, Odjit quickly bowed down to Grizgutz and his new spider friends.
After taking control of the Racknid clan and Odjit’s tribe of mushroom farmers Grizgutz could start his own tribe in Odjit’s lair. Slowly word traveled to neighbouring tribes and Grizgutz’s clan grew.
To make him feel more important Grizgutz commissioned a palanquin to be built for him to ride to war on. It also reminds everyone who’s boss.
Racknid the Rancid, Goblin Big Boss on a Gigantic Spider
After losing the fight to Grizgutz, Racknid gave Grizgutz his prized amulet of protectyness both as a sign of submission and because it didn’t work once in the fight. Since his defeat, Racknid has taken to drinking vast amounts of Backbone brew to bolster his courage after his humiliating defeat.
Odjit, Night Goblin Great Shaman
Has an addiction to various forms of Mushroom and fungus, which has lead to him being very flighty even for a Night Goblin (a paranoia shared by his clan). Before the arrival of Grizgutz, Odjit was the leader of a small, peaceful tribe of mushroom farmers, but now acts as Grizgutz’s advisor. Under the watchful eye of the drug addled Odjit his tribe have a tendency to run away at the drop of a hat but regains their nerve quickly enough to try again.
Ol' Zargok, Orc Shaman
Zargok has built himself a network of loosely connected tribes. From his position at the centre of this network Zargok is aware of all that happens within the badlands. He has sponsored informants to join the tribes of the forests and plains, and these send messages back along the forest paths to his lair.
