So I've finally found that 40k army that I really enjoy every aspect of - the battle nuns of the Adepta Sororitas.
I like my Blood Angels, but have found that the way I was building them was very one dimensional, but I'm not keen to change that or jump into primaris. They were my first army and are a bit too pigeonholed, but I'm being stubborn in wanting to keep them that way.
I really enjoy my Custodes, but they are a little bit too tough, and leaves a bad feeling when I play them and my opponents get frustrated at not killing them.
I enjoy my Tau, but they are in such a weird place with 9th and I don't want to commit to them until their codex comes out.
I really enjoy my Guard, but similarly to Tau, I'm just waiting for an update to them.
I kind of enjoy my Chaos, but want to include Emperor's Children and Daemons of Slaanesh and have no idea what paint scheme to use for the daemons.
I don't really enjoy my Genestealer Cults, the army is too narrow without wanting to step on my Guard's toes. I love the concept of the hidden menace and the perfectly timed trap springing shut. But they just don't play as I'd envisage or have many options and I don't really enjoy games with them.
But then the new Sisters came out. The models are amazing, they are absolutely dripping with theme and they seem to play how they appear in the fluff. I was always keen to jump aboard the Sororitas bandwagon, and when the 9th ed launched with Crusade these were very high on the wishlist. Then comes the 9th ed Codex, some more great models, and a fun-sounding Crusade pack containing the Saint-in-the-making process.
I happened to change jobs and have my Long Service Leave paid out, so this gave me the $$$ to start small with sisters. I'm keeping it small at the moment, hoping to play my way into the army with some Crusade games. Click the link below to check them out, otherwise this page will be kept for WIP and progress updates
The models are amazing, so dynamic and covered in great details with a huge number of head options. However, and this is a big grumble I have with GW's design team at the moment, they only go together one way without significant conversion.
I like to think of myself as a converter, but I'm closer to the kitbash side of the spectrum here. I'm not a great greenstuffer or modeller, but love hacking up plastic/metal bits to create characterful models. With a large number of the Sisters units made from the same box (Battle Sisters, Dominons and Celestians), that meant only realy 10 torso/leg combos for lots of sisters. After building two boxes I haven't worked out how to easily convert these torso/leg combos to create new poses, but I have been playing with hands/weapons especially combining them with bits from the Sacresants, Retributors and Seraphim kits. Hopefully slapping a bit of paint on them will do a lot of the work in differentiating the sisters.
I also picked up the Triumph of Saint Katherine kit. This is a great kit with so many awesome bits to it. However, I'm not using it for its intended purpose. I'm using this to avoid buying all the expensive character kits.
In Australia the Triumph kit costs $180 from GW, cheaper from my FLGS. From this kit I've converted up my Canoness, Dogmata, Imagifier and Palatine, and still have 2 sisters left for a Dialogus or Hospitaller. Not including the 2 leftovers, this would have cost me $219 for the characters, and I still have 2 more to play with (approximately another $100). Not only that but I've got a great objective piece in the form of Saint Katherine's sarcophagus, and a good handful of Cherubs (Cherubim?). I've had to use many bits from the other kits to create these characters, but luckily there's plenty of options in those boxes. I would highly recommend looking into this if you're struggling to shell out huge money for all the fun characters Sisters have access to.
When starting my Adepta Sororitas force I wanted to keep it small, and sisters focused. I started with 2 boxes of sisters, one of Sacresants (those halberds are incredible - except the one that has broken for everyone who bought the box), one box of Retributors and the Triumph. I eventually added in the Seraphim box for the pistols and may build the Zephyrim later. I've already got a unit of Seraphim I converted from some Privateer Press models aaages ago that I like.
I'm not a massive fan of the helmet design, so trying to differentiate the units from each other will have to come mostly from the paint schemes. The hooded heads in the Sacresants kit are really nice, and work well with the hooded sisters from the Triumph kit. So I think I'll keep hooded for the more elite sisters. Battle Sisters will be mostly bare headed, while the Dominions, right up in the face of the enemy, should probably wear helmets. Retributors I haven't decided yet and need to have a good look at the heads on their sprues.
Next for colours:
This was tough, I always wanted to start my own scheme as I wasn't too keen on the standard ones, and not keen to paint red. I want to use these siters with my guard which are a very dark grey with orange trim and bone armour. So to stand out/contrast against them would be white and blue. This is probably top of the list now. It's bright (and I don't have a bright blue army) and I really like a white to show the purity of the sisters. I'd like to highlight their purity - in their eyes - and keep them looking clean and bright on the table, and that's clean colours, not necessarily clean armour as I'll add battle damage too.
My current preferences are (and probably in that order):
Light, bright blue armour and white tabards with dark blue lining
Yellow cloth and silver armour
Green cloth and silver armour
I want to do some test schemes soon, but not sure what models to use as the test subjects. I probably have to use sisters and repaint them later.
In no particular order, my test schemes for the sisters. The light grey colours in the above are supposed to be silver, and the darker yellow is gold.
Ignore the helmet colours for the most part, they were just tests, and some of them look too jarring.
For the basing scheme, I'm going to go base them the same as my imperial guard. This will allow me to join them together for bigger games. Which is now making me think I should base my Custodes on a similar scheme, that way everything can sit alongside each other really nicely.
This scheme is an urban/cities of death type of scheme, lots of rubble and building debris.

After much consternation, research and polling I finally settled on a scheme. I ended up with my original plan, light blue and white. I really liked the yellow and silver, so perhaps I'll have an ally Order join my sisters at some point. Although I'd like to see it on some AdMech too potentially.
So work finally began on painting up the sisters. I opted to paint them off their bases so that I can better access the inside of their cloaks/tabards. This means that I still have to work out how to finish their bases as I want to be able to spray the bases if I can and be a bit heavy-handed with my brushwork to make it quicker. I guess I'll have to find a way of building the bases with 'footprints' for the sisters to glue into after painting.
Given the amount of detail on the bodice, I opted to leave the weapons and heads off and paint them separately, and I'm glad I did, especially with the Retributors who have hoses and ammo belts covering a lot of space. Everything got a priming with Grey Seer, even the weapons, and I think I'll come to regret this, but I didn't have any silver or black spray at home, and couldn't be bothered waiting (a theme running strong through all my projects - too keen to wait and do it properly)
Starting with the armour, I applied Lothern Blue first, then a wash of Drakenhof Nightshade, before going over the blue again with Lothern. Still not sure what to add to the Lothern Blue for highlights yet. I'll have to experiment with either an Ice Blue to keep it bright, or Grey Seer. I'm leaning towards the Ice Blue, but I'll have to see what it does to the Lothern Blue first.
After a layer of Lothern Blue, Drakenhof wash and then Lothern blue again.
For the details, I still haven't exactly worked out what colours to use where. But I think for the Fleur de Lis and Aquila on the shoulderpads, they'll be gold. Which leaves the Inquisition symbol and rosary beads to be coloured. I think Rosary will be a dark grey 'basalt' stone style of bead. Which leaves the Inquisition symbol probably being a silver with bronze bits. The piping will likely be a grey with drakenhof wash, but still unsure about the backpacks.
For the plasma, given this will be the Palatine with the only plasma pistol in the list, I was thinking either yellow or pink. Orange seems a good colour and provides nice contrast to the Blue, but I don't really want a hard contrast, and struggle painting soft orange without it turning apricot. Yellow gives it an almost angelic light, I'll just need to be careful with my gold tones and the yellow.
