As a big Medieval era fan, nothing scratches that itch in 40k like Black Templars. I'd been holding off on starting them for ages, for many reasons. But with the 9th ed codex, and some great models, what better time to get crusadin'
I really like how they've given the Black Templars their own feel again after being such a minor chapter for several editions.
So, armed with the limited codex, a box of Sword Bretheren, some resin power shields, and Helbrecht I put them on a shelf and ignored them for a couple of months.
Unfortunately for the boys in black, they came just as my interest in 40k dipped sharply.
However, it might be on the way up again!
My force will be the last remnants of a larger crusade. This party broke off from their brothers after witnessing the corruption and extravagance of the ecclesiarchy members. They have vowed a penitent war against the corrupt within its ranks.
As new inductees (Primaris) to the order, they have distanced themselves from their older brethren and shun the excesses seen. While they don’t doubt their brothers’ zeal or fanaticism, their commitment to the Ecclesiarchy (specifically the more corrupt and honorless sects) has been called into question.
I'm keen to deviate a little from the traditional Black White and Red scheme, and really like the pale dusty yellow seen on the old Blanche art. Swapping out the red to this yellow colour will be a bit of fun, and hopefully make them stand out a bit against the Black Legion, Raven Guard, Death Company, Pre-Heresy Dark Angels, and other Black Templars found in our group.
As for the black, I'm still not sold on how to do this. I want it to look really deep and dark, but not sure if that means subtle edge highlights or perhaps some darker purple wash over the black. Will just have to play around with it.
The plan for models in this army is to keep it small around 1000pts and elite:
Marshall (Helbrecht Conversion)
Chaplain
Heavy Intercessors (perhaps?)
Intercessors
Bladeguard Veterans
Ancient
Redemptor (perhaps?)
Probably a little heretical, but I'm really not a fan of the Crusaders... I want my marines to be completely covered, no skin showing
