Side Quests for Champions
You are going about your business one day when you hear something very interesting indeed: The Hall of Champions is hosting the legendary Trial of Heroes, a grand tournament held in the bustling town of Birchmont, nestled in the heart of the Summer Duchy. Birchmont, a picturesque town inspired by Greek architecture, boasts a magnificent colosseum at its center. Surrounding this grand arena lies the Hall of Champions, a sprawling complex with feasting halls, barracks for warriors, and a museum safeguarding fabled weapons and armor under arcane wards.
The Trial of Heroes is a spectacle that draws competitors and spectators from every corner of the realm. Open to all champions, the tournament promises fame, glory, and gold to those who triumph in its grueling rounds.
The sun blazes high in a clear summer sky as you arrive in Birchmont, the town alive with anticipation.
After signing your name on the tournament roster, you make your way to the barracks, the air buzzing with the energy of fellow competitors. The week ahead will test your mettle - but it also holds the promise of greatness.
This is your moment to carve your name into legend.

Before the battle arena opens tomorrow, all the champions who have signed up for the Trial of Heroes are invited to gather in the grand feasting hall for a celebration worthy of legend.
The feasting hall is an awe-inspiring sight, its vaulted ceilings adorned with intricate carvings of past victors and mythical creatures. Long tables stretch from end to end, laden with sumptuous dishes: roasted boar, fresh-baked bread, exotic fruits, and flagons of frothy ale and fine wine. The tantalizing aroma of spiced meats and rich sauces fills the air, mingling with the sounds of laughter, clinking goblets, and the occasional boastful tale of daring deeds. This is more than a mere meal—it is a chance to size up your fellow competitors, exchange stories, and perhaps glean insights about the challenges to come. Bards strum lively tunes in the background, and every now and then, a cheer erupts as a champion regales the hall with tales of past triumphs.

Champion Side Quest Four
A Trial of Strength
The Trial begins! Your first round of combat pits you against a party of bandits, armed with crossbows and daggers. The arena has transformed into a sandy landscape with raised structures around the outside and a bridge suspended across the centre of the arena. There are broken down carriages to take shelter behind, and gunpowder barrels arranged strategically (and precariously) around the arena. Roll a d6 dice to see how you do!
Note: If you recruit another spy to help (either by drawing another spy in your quest or doing a collab with another member of Folkland), roll with advantage (roll twice and use the higher roll)!
If you rolled a 1: The bandits overwhelm you, leaving you badly injured and forced to retreat.
If you rolled a 2-3: You barely survive against the bandits, sustaining injuries and receiving a low score from the judges. At least you passed this round!
If you rolled a 4-6: You triumph over the bandits, clearing the round and standing victorious with a fine score. Not a flashy or super impressive performance, but a successful fight nonetheless!
If you rolled a 6: You dispatch the bandits and clear the round with ease! Your performance wows the judges - your fighting is strategic, smooth and most importantly - engaging! What a thrill for the spectators! Someone throws +25 fairy gold and A Troll’s eye into the arena for you.
Draw or write about how the first round goes for your character.
Rewards:
100 fairy gold
10 crystals
Treasure map
Vial of poison

Champion Side Quest Five
A Trial of Speed
⚠️This is a partner quest! Recruit another spy and include them in your quest submission or do a collab.⚠️
Round two is a race between you and a rival. You are not in the arena this time, but in the mountains next to Birchmont. You must make a frantic dash down the treacherous mountain path in the hot sun, navigating sharp switchback paths, rundown bridges and narrow ledges. First to the bottom and across the finish line wins the race. Mountain goats seem to love this path, as well as swooping birds… and is that a boggle aiming an arrow at you?!
Draw or write about your character racing another character down the Birchmont mountainside. Last one to the bottom is a rotten egg!
Rewards (per character, not shared):
200 fairy gold
20 crystals
Goat horn drinking horn
Seagull egg
⚔️
Champion Side Quest Six
A Trial of Dexterity
Round three is located back in the arena. This time, the landscape has transformed into a huge swamp - twisting mangrove trees, murky water and thick choking mists sprawling out ahead of you. The acrid stench of toxic gas hisses up from bubbling pools in the mucky, unstable earth beneath your feet. You spot ghouls hiding in the dank swamp, waiting to ambush you. To beat this round, navigate this hazardous maze of natural and unnatural dangers, testing your balance, mobility and agility.
Solve this maze puzzle and DM your results to the founder Isi (isi.a on Discord). Alternatively, draw or write about your character navigating the swampy maze and dodging/encountering ghouls.
If you have already solved the puzzle, roll 1d6:
If you rolled a 1: You can’t figure it out
If you rolled a 2-3: You succeed but at a high cost (or only partially succeed)
If you rolled a 4-5: You succeed
If you rolled a 6: You succeed wildly!
Rewards:
100 fairy gold
10 crystals
Mystery piece of ghoul
Mangrove vines
⚔️
Champion Side Quest Seven
A Trial of Bravery
The fourth and final round of the Trial of Heroes is to test something not physical, but mental. You step back into the arena, which has transformed into an underground cavern filled with glow worms. Boulders and glowing trees provide cover. You hear a deep, animalistic growl from a deep, pitch black crevice in the cave, and a monster breaches the surface, entering the arena from underneath the ground. What monster are you facing? A dread wolf? A cave troll? A serpent overtaken by Polypore spores? A Strzyga who has succumbed to their were- bat form?
Draw or write about your character battling a frightening monster.
Rewards:
100 fairy gold
10 crystals
Glow worms
Trial of Heroes trophy
The Trial of Heroes comes to a close. What an experience! After a very long and exhausting week, you think you’ll close off your time in Birchmont with a hearty meal and maybe a drink at The Broken Tankard tavern, before you leave town.
⚔️
Champion Side Quest Eight
Tavern Brawl
The tavern is dimly lit by the glow of a crackling fire and some lantern light. A small band plays gently in the corner, their instruments filling the room with soothing melodies that weave through the air. You’re just settling down to your meal and enjoying the music, when a brawl starts. The burly tavern keep is attempting to calm the chaos.
Draw or write about what your character does in the brawl. Do they stay out of the way, try to break it up, or dive into the middle of it?
