Arachnus

🍄 Overview

Arachnus are a race of spider-like people that inhabit the Darkwood. With multiple eyes and limbs, these people have spooky appearances that belie a cautious and gentle nature underneath. They are one of very few races that have left the Darkwood and allied themselves with The Seelie Courts despite being Unseelie citizens.

Arachnus are humanoid spider folk with with 4 arms and 2 legs, and 8 eyes.

Clothing

• They wear tattered rags in dark colours accented with dirty white.

• They wear bronze armour - always dull and rusted.

• Clothing is dirty and shredded.

• Fabrics are silk, cotton, lace.

• They can accessorize with bone jewellery, spider web netting, blood red pearls, fly or mushroom decorations, petrified wood jewellery.

• Female Arachnus generally wear long dresses and skirts rather than pants.

• Clothing styles are goth and boho goth, with stays, corsets, petticoats, tunics and thick skirts in tattered lace styles.

🍄 Birth, Life and Death

Birth

Arachnus hatch from the egg of a dire spider. These massive spiders lay hundreds of eggs, but only once in a blue moon will one of these spider hatchlings be an Arachnus. They are born as sticky, sickly babes and the dire spider usually leaves them on the outskirts of a Darkwood village to be taken in by Dark Fae communities. 

Life

Arachnus are sickly and although they have the potential to live up to 200 years, most struggle to pass 80 years. The cause of their weak constitution is not known but magic seems to help extend their lifespan. 

Death

When Arachnus die, their bodies are wrapped in silk and spider thread. They are then suspended in a deep, dark section of the Darkwood called The Silkwood where an Arachnus medium called Selna prepares them and looks over them. It is assumed that the bodies are left there forever with Selna taking care of them forever, but nobody is really sure.

Personality Traits

• Arachnus are quiet, sometimes gloomy Fae. They are prone to solitude and may find it hard to make friends.They are lonely souls but are friendly once you break their walls down.

• Many of them enjoy scholarly or artistic pursuits that engage their minds.

• They also can be a bit melodramatic and prone to bouts of sadness and pettiness.

• They enjoy quiet hobbies such as reading or star gazing.

Your Arachnus should have a few of these traits but doesn’t have to have all of them. Please feel free to put a unique spin on it.

Romance, Marriage and Offspring

Romance

Arachnus are incredibly romantic and believe in soulmates. 

Marriage

Marriage is common for these folk. 

Offspring

Arachnus couple with a partner to produce live young - but their young aren’t Arachnus, they are normal spiders that are sentient. They lay dozens of these eggs. At the present moment it is unclear how Arachnus came to be.

They can adopt other Arachnus, and certainly other Unseelie races. They generally make loving parents.

Miscellaneous

• Arachnus like to eat bugs, frogs, rodents, and small birds. They are also fond of mushrooms. Since leaving the Darkwood, they have discovered fish and quite like eating them raw. Fruits, mead and cake are far too sweet.
