Knuckers

🍄 Overview

Knucker are proud, powerful draconic fae descended from fairy dragons. Knuckers love water and always live near water sources (or near lava rivers if you're a volcanic knucker).

🍄 Appearance

Knuckers are draconic in appearance, with horns, scales, tails and pointed ears. They have normal shaped feet

Oceanic Knuckers have coral horns, fish scales and webbed tails. They are often colourful.

Volcanic Knuckers have bone horns, classic dragon scales, and spiked tails. They are often warm-toned in colour.

Fjord Knuckers have tree branch horns, lizard scales, and hairy tails. They are often green, yellow, and brown in colour to blend in with grass.

Design Guidelines

• All Knuckers have horns. Male horns are generally larger or more elaborate than females, as they need to be impressive enough to win a mate. When excited, their horns:

  • Oceanic: start streaming bubbles.

  • Volcanic: Glow like magma and volcanic cracks appear and steam comes out of their mouth or nose.

  • Fjord: Flowers and buds suddenly pop up and you may smell fresh cut grass.

• All Knucker have normal shaped teeth.

Clothing

• Oceanic: Shell, coral or crustacean armour or fish scales.

• Volcanic: Their armour is usually scale mail, gemstone or obdisian plating or metal of some sort. 

• Fjord: Wooden or leather armour.

🍄 Birth, Life and Death

Birth

• Knuckers are hatched from eggs. Oceanic Knucker eggs are scaled like fish, Volcanic Knucker eggs are made from obsidian, and Fjord Knucker eggs look like bird eggs.

• There are usually only 1-3 eggs in a clutch.

• Knucker mothers are known to be extremely protective and aggressive over her eggs.

• All Knucker are descended from fairy dragons. Oceanic Knucker are descended from sea serpents, Volcanic Knucker are descended from european dragons, and Fjord Knucker are descended from floral dragons.

Life

• Rapid growth from adolescence and then slow aging for the rest of their lives.

• All Knucker live to around 1000 years old.

• They always build a 'knucker hole' near their water source - deep wells of water that have no bottom. They live in and around the water source.

  • Fjord Knucker like to live in fjords, glades, glens and mountains as long as they are near inland lakes or rivers. They love having large flowerbeds, hammocks to lounge in, and have a deep affinity to the earth.

  • Volcanic Knucker like to live in and around volcanoes and lava rivers. There is a large community living in the volcano 'Mount Arandis' in the Summer Duchy, and a smaller community living near a lava river in the Black Forest in the Darkwood.

  • Oceanic Knucker live in the ocean itself, trading with fishfolk, but also on beaches, in rockpools, coral reefs and in coves.

Death

• They carve statues of their loved ones when they die (rather than tombstones) and decorate them.

  • Oceanic Knucker bury their dead in sandbeds and decorate the statues with pearls and coral.

  • Volcanic Knucker bury their dead in lava rivers (using a magic ritual) and decorate the statues with gems and fire flowers. Volcanic Knuckers are resistant to lava and fire so can be buried in lava rivers.

  • Fjord Knucker bury their dead beneath the earth next to water sources and decoare the statues with flowers and moss.

Personality Traits

• All Knucker can be loyal - they don't do well with betrayal.

• All Knucker can be proud - they grow sharp claws when excited or angry.

• Oceanic Knucker can be spiritual, unpretentious, cold, calm, adaptive, creative, resourceful. They value competency and resourcefulness.

  • They like to build, craft, trade and decorate their homes in the ocean.

• Volcanic Knucker can be fiesty, aggressive, passionate, stubborn, genuine, down to earth. They value authenticity and a life filled with experiences and memories.

  • They like to play Knuckerball and lava diving.

• Fjord Knucker can be lazy, dreamers, free-spirited, nomadic, non-judgemental, aimless, steady. They value beauty, creativity and magic prowess.

  • They like to laze around in the grass and weave flower crowns all day.

Your Knucker character can have a few of these traits but certainly don't have to have all of them. Please feel free to put a unique spin on it.

Romance, Marriage and Offspring

Romance

• Knucker are passionate lovers, but not necessarily prone to monogamy. 

• No issues with same sex relationships. Inter-racial relationships tend to come with suspicion, as Knuckers are territorial and unsure of outsiders. Fjord Knucker are the most tolerant. 

• Fishfolk/Ocean Knucker relationships are relatively common.

• Selkie/Ocean Knucker relationships are relatively common and accepted - as both races live between land and sea.

Marriage

• About half of all Knucker will marry their partner.

• Marriage ceremonies are large affairs with dancing, feasting, sparring, and elaborate magic rituals.

Offspring

• Knuckers will have 1-3 eggs in a clutch.

• Children that are boisterous, active and have strong personalities early on are considered auspicious.

Miscellaneous

• Fairy Dragons are incredibly powerful and sacred to Folkland. That is why a Knucker, their progency, will have a racial bonus to whatever stat their chosen class is based on - they are born stronger or more magical than most fae.

• Knucker historically have been aggressive, isolated, and tricky - and use to cause hassle to nearby towns and villagers. They have since been forced to become better neighbors so they can trade.

• Knucker tend to be very territorial and protective over their homes/land. 

  • Ocean Knucker tend to think Volcanic Knucker are hot heads, and Fjord Knucker are lazy.

  • Volcanic Knucker tend to think Ocean Knucker are boring and serious, and Fjord Knucker are stupid but fun.

  • Fjord Knucker tend to think Ocean Knucker are too serious and isolated, and Volcanic Knucker are too active/exhausting.
