One of the tasks that student workers are assigned is dusting. Libraries seem to accumulate massive amounts of dust, and the Circulation Department is in charge of keeping our library under control.
Steps to dusting:
1. Locate the binder for your team.
2. Find the location where the last person stopped. They should have noted the call number for the "Section End" (the last book they touched) in the dusting section of the team binder. This is where you will start.
3. Fill in your name, date, and call number where you are starting in the log.
4. Retrieve your location sticker from the binder.
5. Fill in your name, date, and call number where you are starting.
6. Place the sticker on your name tag, so you can leave it upstairs when you complete your stacks shift.
7. Take a dust cloth, a dust broom, and a cart and head to the stacks.
8. Locate the call number where you will start, which should have the sticker from the previous student who dusted. Keep that sticker on your name tag as well.
9. Begin where the last person ended, and work your way down following the call number range.
10. Remove all the books from one shelf and dust each book individually, and then dust the shelves.
11. Replace the books back on the shelf in a neat and orderly manner.
12. Start on the next lower shelf, and continue. The image below shows the route to follow when dusting.
13. Once you have completed your shift in the stacks you need to make a note of the call number of the last book you dusted. You can write this on a scrap paper or on the sticker of the previous student worker's sticker on your name tag.
14. Place your sticker on the shelf by the last book you dusted for the next student worker to find.
15. Bring the sticker down from the person who worked before you and place it on the laminated dusting log sheet in the binder.
16. Note the place that you stopped in the location log and what time you came back down.
Helpful Hints
Stools are located around the stacks to help you reach the top shelf and to sit on when dusting the bottom shelves.
It is important to finish dusting at the end of a shelf... otherwise the next person will have to redo the work you did.
