The following are rules and expectations that need to followed while on the clock.
No cell phones at the front desk or upstairs while working in the stacks. If you have to make an urgent call, speak to one of your supervisors and step away from the area.
Please do not allow your friends to hang out at the Circulation Desk while you are working. People will hesitate to come to the desk because they think that you are helping someone. You will also miss any issues or problems that may occur. This also includes other student workers waiting to clock in or out.
Limit your internet usage on Circ 1 and Circ 2 to only Tarleton and library websites.
There are usually 2 student workers per hour, except late nights and weekends. It is expected that one works the desk, while the other works in the stacks for an hour. At the end of the hour, you will switch. You should not work the desk for more than an hour unless you are the only student worker.
While working the desk, be sure to stay at the desk. Do not hang out behind the wall. People are more hesitant to come to the desk if they do not see someone sitting at it. We want to provide the best customer service possible.
While working in the stacks, you are allowed to listen to music. However, make sure it is at a volume in which you can still hear what is going on around you. Remember, in the evenings you are the only staff member upstairs to help patrons and respond to any issues. Music is NEVER allowed at the desk.
Homework is only allowed at the circulation desk on weekends and after 10 PM on weekdays. All desk duties should be completed first.
You are responsible for showing up for your assigned shift unless you are sick or there is an emergency. Needing to study for an exam is, unfortunately, not a viable reason. However, if you get someone to trade with you, that is acceptable.
If you work 4 hours, you get a 15 minute break. If you work 5 or more hours, you get a 30 minute break. If you are the only one on duty, ask a supervisor to cover the desk for you. Unfortunately, on weekends you won't be able to leave the desk.
Never let a non-staff person behind the desk! This could result in termination. In some rare cases, a person may be meeting with library staff. Always double check with that person and then escort the person to the respective office if needed.
During your time here, you will be evaluated at the end of each semester as gone over in the "Student Worker Handbook." Remember, failing to meet these rules and expectations can result in you getting written up or even terminated.
