Official Wording:
“Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”
This step invites individuals to begin developing faith—not necessarily in a specific religion, but in the idea that recovery is possible through something beyond one's own willpower.
Key ideas include:
Opening up to help—from others, community, or a higher power.
Letting go of the belief that you must face this alone.
Trusting that change is possible, even if you don’t fully understand how yet.
This step gently shifts the focus from despair toward possibility. It’s about:
Cultivating hope that life can get better.
Beginning to see that healing doesn’t rest on you alone.
Accepting support from a spiritual source, community, or even simply the process.
What does a “Power greater than yourself” mean to you right now?
When have you experienced something that made you feel supported, uplifted, or guided?
What does “sanity” look like for your life moving forward?
Close your eyes and take a slow breath in. Exhale gently. Let your thoughts settle as you listen inwardly.
Imagine yourself in a quiet space—perhaps beside a river, beneath a starry sky, or in your own sanctuary. You are not alone. There is a calm presence beside you. It doesn’t speak, but you feel supported. This presence could be a higher power, a feeling of connection, nature, or simply the sense that healing is possible. You are held. You are safe. You are ready to believe in your own restoration.
Take another deep breath. Let go of the need to understand everything—just trust in the possibility. When you’re ready, gently open your eyes.
Today I started to explore the idea that there could be something greater than myself. That maybe I don’t have to carry the weight alone. I don’t know exactly what this “Power” looks like, but I’m open to finding out. I want to believe that healing is possible—that I can find clarity, balance, and peace again. For now, I’m taking small steps toward trusting this process. I’m tired, but I’m not giving up.
