🧹 Step 6 of Recovery: The Principle of Willingness and Transformation
Step 6 in the 12-step recovery model says:
“Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.”
This step marks a shift from awareness to readiness. You’ve identified your character defects in Step 4 and shared them in Step 5—now, you’re preparing to let them go.
Willingness: Being open to change, even if it’s uncomfortable or unfamiliar.
Acceptance: Recognizing your flaws without shame, and accepting that they no longer serve you.
Humility: Understanding that transformation isn’t about willpower—it’s about surrendering to a process greater than yourself.
Commitment: Choosing to show up and do the work, even when progress feels slow.
Perseverance: Continuing forward despite setbacks or doubts.
You’re not expected to be perfect—just ready.
You’re acknowledging that these defects have harmed you and others.
You’re preparing to release old behaviors and embrace new ones.
Reflecting on which defects you’re truly ready to let go of—and which ones you’re still holding onto.
Praying or meditating for the willingness to change.
Talking with a sponsor or mentor about your readiness and fears.
Journaling about what life might look like without those defects.
Step 6 is like standing at the edge of a new beginning. You’ve done the hard work of uncovering your patterns—now you’re choosing to let healing begin.
