There is no right or wrong way to decide your future but by using the information in this website you can make it easier to make an informed decision on what your pathway might look like.
You will be guided through the process by your class teachers and your PCS Teacher to ensure that you have the best fit for you and your future.
Where possible you should pick subjects from within your current timetable. This will ensure continuity and progression, giving you the best chance to succeed.
Our Curriculum Map for Session 2026-2027 shows how each pupil's week is divided up by subject. In the BGE there is a wide range of subjects that cover many benchmarks.
At the end of S2, you will pick 7 subjects, including Maths or Maths Apps and English. You will study these subjects for S3 & S4 - gaining National Qualifications. You will study some for 3 periods in S3 and 4 periods in S4 and others 4 periods in S4 and 3 periods in S4. This will even out with all subjects over the two year period. You will sit National Qualifications in the exam diet in May 2028
Moving into S4 in June 2026, you will pick 7 subjects, including Maths and English - this will lead towards the pupils gaining qualifications in the Exam diet in May. These will normally be National 4 or National 5 Qualifications. You will sit National Qualifications in the exam diet in May 2027.
Pupils moving into S5 and S6, in June 2026, will pick 5 subjects, National and Higher Qualifications. They will spend 6 periods a week in each Higher Subject. They may also study Bolt on Subjects in Columns they are studying National Qualifications. You will sit National Qualifications in the exam diet in May 2027

This website is the next stage of the process where you will start to
select the subjects that interest you the most or help you towards the type of job you
eventually want.

Job Market Information
In the booklet you will find information about the job market and possible changes in
the range of jobs available from area to area. The information has been collated
from a range of sources including employers and Skills Development Scotland (SDS).
Pathways to Employment
The ‘Pathways’ section will give you key employment areas and
suggested routes into the job market you are interested in. Both you and
your parent/carer will be able to see there are a range of ways to reach a destination.
You will be able to look at the options available to you and make the best choices to
keep these options open.
Qualifications Explained
Qualifications have changed a lot over time. This section will show your parent/carer
how Standard Grade, Intermediates, National Exams etc.
compare to qualifications now. It will also provide information on qualifications that
were not talked about before, in schools.
This section will provide you with increased knowledge and understanding of the
courses available in school and the areas covered in each course.
