The National 5 Physical Education course provides learners with the opportunity to develop and apply physical, mental, social and emotional skills through practical performance and reflective learning. The course aims to improve learners’ physical competence and confidence by engaging them in a range of physical activities, while also encouraging a deeper understanding of how performance can be developed and evaluated.
Learners will take part in various practical activities such as team games, dance, racquet sports and outdoor activities. Through these activities, they will develop a range of physical skills, including movement patterns, techniques, fitness, coordination and control. Alongside this, learners will enhance mental skills such as concentration, decision-making, planning and problem-solving, particularly when adapting performance strategies to different challenges.
The course also places strong emphasis on social and personal skills. Learners will develop communication, teamwork, leadership and cooperation through group tasks, practices and performances. They will learn to evaluate their own and others’ performance, set goals, and use feedback to make informed improvements. This reflective process supports the development of confidence, resilience and responsibility.
A key aspect of the course is performance analysis. Learners will investigate factors that impact performance, such as physical, mental, emotional and social factors, and apply methods to improve performance. These skills are transferable beyond physical education, supporting learners’ overall health, wellbeing and lifelong participation in physical activity.
Pupils will be assessed through competing in 2 'one off' sports performances, and a written portfolio.
Successful completion of National 5 Physical Education provides learners with a strong foundation for further study and personal development in physical activity and sport. Learners may progress to Higher Physical Education, where they will further develop performance, analysis and evaluation skills.
Potential employment pathways linked to physical education and physical activity include careers in sports coaching, fitness instruction, leisure and recreation services, outdoor activity instruction, and sports development. With further training and qualifications, learners may progress into roles such as PE teacher, sports scientist, physiotherapist, personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, or health promotion officer.
