Languages are an essential skill in an increasingly globalised world and enable learners to enhance their personal development and embrace a broader range of opportunities in the workplace. Through the acquisition of a second language, learners build core linguistic skills, empowering them to more easily learn further languages. Employers, universities and colleges all value the meta-skills that language-learning demonstrates.
Through the study of languages in S3 and at N4, N5 and Higher, you will develop the key skills of communication, which include reading, listening, verbal and written communication, and the use of technology in relevant and real-life contexts. You will also enhance your skills in collaboration, sense-making and critical thinking as you work with others to understand and analyse a variety of media, texts and music in another language.
The challenge of language-learning reinforces your ability to adapt to changing situations and become a more resilient and independent learner. Being able to initiate communication in another language is a real achievement and builds confidence and leadership skills.
Employers are eager to find enthusiastic individuals with keen cultural insight and sensitivity, which languages foster, leading to increased respect and empathy. There are many language-specific fields of employment, such as translation and interpretation, however, languages also have an incredibly broad application and open new horizons in many sectors, including engineering, science and technology.
French is available at N3/N4/N5 and Higher
