The SQA National 5 Practical Cake Craft qualification is designed for pupils who enjoy baking and creative food preparation. This practical course focuses on developing baking, decorating, and presentation skills while encouraging creativity, precision, and confidence in the kitchen. It is ideal for pupils who enjoy hands-on learning and working with food in a creative way.
Throughout the course, pupils will bake a range of cakes and desserts using different methods and techniques. They will learn how to prepare ingredients accurately, follow recipes, and use kitchen equipment safely. Pupils will also develop skills in cake finishing and decoration, including icing, piping, coating, and decorative techniques to produce high-quality finished products. Food hygiene and safety are key elements of the course, helping pupils understand how to work cleanly and safely at all times.
The course helps pupils develop a wide range of practical skills, such as weighing and measuring, mixing, baking, timing, and presentation. Pupils will also learn how to plan baking tasks, organise their workspace, and manage time effectively when producing multiple items.
