National 5 Geography helps young people make sense of the world by exploring both natural and human environments. Pupils study how landscapes such as Glaciated Uplands and Coastal areas are formed and changed, and they learn how weather patterns affect everyday life.
They also investigate human environments, including population change, the way urban environments change over time, modern developments in rural landscapes They study key global issues including health; looking at how diseases are spread and controlled, and climate change. Throughout the course, learners develop valuable skills in mapwork, data interpretation, and research.
They are encouraged to think critically about real-world challenges and consider how people and places are connected. This course provides a strong foundation for further study and helps prepare young people to be informed, responsible global citizens.
Assessment in SQA National 5 Geography
Assessment in National 5 Geography is designed to let pupils show what they understand about the world and how well they can use geographical skills. It has two main parts:
• A final exam, where pupils answer questions on the physical and human topics they have studied and use maps, graphs and diagrams to show their understanding (worth 80% of their final grade)
• An Assignment, where pupils choose a geographical topic, carry out research, and present their findings. This helps them develop important skills such as decision-making, analysing information and communicating clearly (worth 20% of their final grade).
Together, these assessments give pupils the chance to demonstrate both their knowledge and their ability to apply geographical skills to real-world issues
