S3, N4/5 and Higher
Courses at all levels share similar skills.
N4/5 and Higher course have independent practical project-based outcomes internally assessed for SQA, all have written/research element externally assessed for SQA. N5 and Higher have content based and analytical written exam for SQA.
Communication components:
• Following verbal instructions
• Listening and taking notes during class discussions
• Using IT Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Forms, DSLR. cameras to record practical work, uploading and managing files
• Working collaboratively, sharing ideas and information through discussion
• Evaluative comments/ written understanding of construction techniques, for written exam
• Communicating themes and ideas through pupil's own research work
• Data literacy – using Microsoft Forms to gather information and undertake market research
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving components:
• Creativity, originality, innovation, Ideas for fashion/textile items
• researching designers and techniques
• Analysing the work of designers
• Planning fashion/textile items (ideas, imagining, visualising)
• reviewing/evaluating, setting next steps,
• Curiosity-looking closely at the way in which textiles and fashion/textile items are produced
Collaboration components:
• Working collaboratively on research tasks and presentations
• Sharing equipment
• Sharing ideas/brainstorming
• Making personal connections, peer support with equipment, incorporating their own twist/personal taste in choices of design and fabric
Personal Responsibility components:
• Resource management (small items of sewing equipment, sewing machine, over locker, iron, ironing board)
• Time management planning ahead for making items and gathering data to be used at the next stage of an investigation
• Meeting deadlines
• Dealing with unexpected situations – mistakes being made and re-doing sewing, wait times for equipment, undertaking new techniques not tried before
• Pupils consider health and safety, creating risk assessment and looking at scenarios in the sewing room which could prove hazardous – Tools of the Trade booklets
