National 5
The SQA National 5 Practical Cookery qualification is designed for pupils who enjoy cooking and would like to develop practical skills for everyday life and possible future careers. The course focuses on hands-on learning and helps pupils become confident, safe, and independent when working in the kitchen.
Throughout the course, pupils will prepare and cook a wide range of dishes. They will learn how to use kitchen equipment safely, follow recipes accurately, and apply correct food hygiene and safety procedures. Pupils will also develop an understanding of nutrition and healthy eating, including how to prepare balanced meals that meet different dietary needs.
A key part of the course is the development of practical cookery skills, such as weighing and measuring ingredients, knife skills, timing, and presentation. Pupils will learn how to plan meals, organise their work area, and manage time effectively when cooking several tasks at once. These skills are important both in school and at home.
The course also helps pupils develop transferable skills that are valuable in many areas of life and work. These include problem-solving, organisation, working independently, following instructions, and evaluating their own work. Pupils will build confidence and responsibility by preparing dishes and reflecting on how they can improve.
National 5 Practical Cookery is an excellent choice for pupils who enjoy practical learning. It provides essential life skills and a strong foundation for further study or employment in food, hospitality, or related industries.
On successful completion of SQA National 5 Practical Cookery, pupils can progress toward entry-level roles within the food and hospitality industry.
Possible opportunities include:
kitchen assistant,
catering assistant,
food preparation assistant, or
trainee chef in cafés, restaurants, hotels, and catering settings.
The practical cooking, food hygiene, teamwork, and time management skills developed during the course also support part-time work and further training within hospitality and related industries
