National 5 Scottish Studies gives learners a broad and engaging understanding of Scotland’s people, places and heritage. The course brings together four key areas — History, Geography, Travel & Tourism, and Scotland in Focus — allowing students to explore Scotland from different perspectives.
Through topics such as historical events and figures, Scotland’s diverse landscapes and environments, and the importance of tourism to our economy and communities, pupils develop valuable skills in research, communication and critical thinking. The course encourages pride in Scotland’s identity while helping young people understand how our past and present shape the country they live in today.
Assessment
Assessment in National 5 Scottish Studies is designed to be flexible, supportive and focused on building real understanding of Scotland’s history, landscapes and tourism industry. There is no final exam for this course. Instead, pupils are assessed through four units, each linked to one of the subjects they study (History, Geography, Travel & Tourism and Scotland in Focus).
In each unit, learners complete classroom-based tasks that allow them to show their knowledge and understanding. These may include short written responses, research tasks, presentations or practical activities. Teachers assess this work throughout the year, helping pupils build confidence and improve their skills as they go.
To achieve the full National 5 Scottish Studies Award, pupils must pass all four units. The course is designed to be accessible and engaging, giving every learner the chance to succeed and progress to further study in the Social Subjects.
