MUSIC
S3, N4/5 and Higher
Courses at all levels share similar skills which are:
Performing (on two instruments one of which can be voice)),
Composition and
Understanding Music (though learning music concepts and musical literacy)
There are internally assessed areas in all the above areas (Linked to SQA guidelines).
In addition, N5 and Higher pupils are assessed in performing by a visiting examiner
(Feb/ March).
They also sit ab SQA Understanding Music written exam which involves relating their
subject knowledge to recorded music clips (May).
Communication components:
Focussed listening and confidently sharing ideas with their teacher and others in
the class.
Communicate the intentions of the composers of their chosen pieces.
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving components:
Analysis of pieces and applying musical concepts in unfamiliar musical contexts
Information gathering (researching different musical genres etc.)
Curiosity (developing ideas) and creativity by composing their own music
Collaboration components:
Imitation – using musical ideas learned from listening to a wide variety of music in pupil’s own compositions
Empathy for other class members (noise regulation, giving constructive criticism through peer assessment)
Personal Responsibility components:
• Developing self-regulation, resilience and a sound work ethic though perseverance while avoiding distractions.
• Resource management (including accessing sheet music, instruments/ beaters etc.)
• Time management so pupils are meeting deadlines in all course areas.
