Advanced Higher Physical Education offers learners the opportunity to develop a highly sophisticated understanding of performance through advanced practical participation, critical analysis and independent research. The course is designed for motivated learners who wish to deepen their knowledge of physical education and sport while further refining their performance and leadership skills.
Learners will demonstrate performance in one physical activity at an advanced level, applying complex skills, techniques and strategies in challenging and competitive contexts. Through this performance, learners will continue to refine advanced physical skills, including movement efficiency, technical accuracy, tactical awareness and physical fitness. The course places a strong emphasis on performance analysis, requiring learners to critically evaluate their own performance using detailed data, research and theoretical concepts.
A key feature of Advanced Higher Physical Education is the Performance Development Project, where learners independently plan, implement and evaluate a programme to improve performance. This develops high-level thinking skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and evaluation. Learners also enhance research skills, such as data collection, analysis, interpretation and the effective use of evidence to justify conclusions.
Throughout the course, learners develop advanced personal and transferable skills, including leadership, communication, self-management, resilience and the ability to work independently. The demands of the course encourage learners to take responsibility for their own learning and performance development.
Advanced Higher Physical Education provides excellent preparation for university study and careers in physical education, sport, health and related fields, while promoting lifelong engagement in physical activity.
